Pregnancy

May I ask how much weight you have gained please?

I have just stood on the scales for the first time since mid December and got a nasty shock. I have already gained nearly 9 kilos and I am only 23 weeks pregnant.

I have been reading up on weight gain during pregnancy and it seems that 8-12 kilos is the norm. I have already started reigning in my eating since the weigh in, but if I keep gaining the way I have been I am going to blow those guidelines out of the water.

Has everyone else's weight gain stayed within these guidelines? At what point did you gain the most weight?

I'm 36 weeks and have gained just under 10 kilos now. Gained the most at the beginning of the 3rd trimester I think.

Were you underweight/low BMI to start with? If so you're likely to need to gain more than someone with an average or high BMI.

My BMI was 20 to begin with, now it is 23. Still within the healthy range but if I am not careful it want be for much longer.

I do eat a healthy diet...just probably too much of it!

Sorry to be all sensible like, but the 'healthy range' BMI applies to non-pregnant people. You know, those without the extra blood, amniotic fluid, additional person...

Just add a foot on to your height as compensation..

I put on loads- started about 72/73 kg which is bang on 25 BMI and was about 92.5 kg just before having completely average 3.4kg weight DD at 41.5 weeks.
I didn't have any BP/ weird preggo issues, I just put on a lot of weight with it. Think it went on pretty evenly over time, don't remember any surges.

Hi, I don't like kilos either lol. I freaked out too at end of 2nd trimester as had put on 1st and 9lb and according to guidelines was way too much as I was slightly over weight to start with. Really panicked as I knew that I was supposed to put on most weight during thrid trimester. However everyone is different and I needn't have panicked! Since then (and I am 32 weeks today) I have only put on an extra 2lb, which I am not concerned as being low gain as my bump is still growing and I am measuring fine. I try to eat healthy (try lol, I don't really deprive myself lol) and I try to do at least 10-20 min exercise every day. Everyone is different and so far I seem to have put the bulk of my weight on in the second trimester - although there is still 8 weeks to go lol. According to the figures I should be putting on 2 stone max in my whole pregnancy, I just keep telling myself muscle weighs more than fat lol (I still do a dumbbell workout once a week).

Hooray for Habitual!

Don't be sorry- great news! Feel really stupid for not thinking about that.

It is actually a really good wake up call for me. I know I have been eating too much, but in the beginning it was the only way to stop feeling ill and then it was Christmas... Now it is just a bad habit.

Good Wink

By all means think about what you're putting in your mouth, but ffs don't worry about how much weight you're putting on. I don't think weight gain is that much under your control when pregnant anyway.

If your BMI was 20 before pregnancy then that's the lower end of 'normal' and you could probably get away with gaining a bit more than the 8-12kg. Habitual is right though - don't worry about what your BMI is now.
My BMI was 24 before pregnancy so I'm trying to be careful (Christmas and all that malarkey aside of course!) Am 27 weeks and have put on 5kgs. But my experience with DS1 is that more weight went on in the last 8 weeks than I had anticipated, partly because you physically move less/ slower because you feel that much more cumbersome and tired. So that's why I am trying to be a bit careful this time around, which in reality means don't eat cake every day and try limit the chocolate fixes...

Hmmm I'm worried. I'm 22 weeks and have put on about 10kgs since pre conception. That's 22 lbs to those that don't work in kgs. I have ALWAYS found my weight hard to control. For my entire adult life my weight's been on the up or I'm dieting. My pre pregnancy bmi varies between 24 at my slimmest ( size 12 as I have huge boobs) and 27 size (14/16) at which point I get stressed and join at diet class. I love food and hate restricting myself, but I also never want to be obese for both health and self esteem reasons so put myself through a diet. This is my 1st pregnancy and I know I can't diet plus I secretly enjoy having an excuse to eat what I want, but I'm also aware that more weight gain happens between now and term and I don't want to end up putting on 20 or more kgs then seriously regretting it. I intend to breast feed but simply don't trust that to help me loose weight as I have a proven track record for overeating.... Sorry for hijacking the OP's post but some advice would be gratefully received.

Hi, I started at BMI 22.5 and at 30 weeks I guess I've gained at least a stone (guessing as not been weighed!), mainly at the beginning as felt sick with an empty stomach. Feel a bit bigger but not too worried!

By 28 weeks I had gained 10kg (22lbs). Gained nothing in the first trimester, rapid weight gain in the second, now it is starting to slow down. However, I started with a BMI of 18, so actually quite pleased with the weight gain. I don't normally put on weight easily so support the view that pregnancy weight gain is completely out of your control. Fully expect to put on another stone before the end - just thinking of it happily as fat to feed my baby with :)

I'm 38 weeks and have put on 8kg but it's quite normal to put on up to 2 stone in pregnancy:)

I'm 17+4 and weighed myself at the weekend (there were scales in the hotel I was in - we don't have any at home) and I've gained nothing so far - although my bump is very pronounced and my boobs are massive - but I figure I've probably lost and then gained as I suffered from terrible morning sickness - it's not entirely over now, but in between bouts I'm stuffing my face. Curry tonight. Yum.

The 10-12lb guidelines are bollocks. I asked my midwife and she said up to 3 stone gain is a "normal" weight gain in pregnancy. It varies wildly from woman to woman.

I was 59kg before getting pregnant (I'm 5'5) and about 85kg at 41 weeks. Now 5 weeks after DD was born I'm back down to 69kg so it's coming off faster than it went on.

The best advice is eat to appetite as long as it's healthy food. If you calorie restrict you're more likely to end up with pregnancy side effects and stop your baby from developing properly.

1 1/2 stone with ds, 3 stone with each dd.
