Can I ask how much your pram/pushchair etc cost?

Sorry if it's inappropriate But DH is doing my head in!!!

This purchase is the one thing we can't reach a decision on!! I've seen a gorgeous set I like, starts off as a pram, transforms to pushchair when needed (front and rear facing as per choice) and also comes with separate car seat, rain covers and travel bag. It is £280 and DH says there is NO way we are spending that much money on a pram I actually thought it was pretty good value for all that is included (and it's gorgeous)!!

Is he being stingy or am I being delusional?

My last one was about £530 all in. Pram with carrycot,cosy toes and rain covers was about £380. Car seat £120 and adaptors to put the car seat on pram frame.

£280 is very cheap IMO. Has he seen a decent pram for less than that anywhere?

I bought a M&P pushchair (forerunner to to Pliko) for £150 which was half price, I also paid £130 for the first stage car seat, which also clipped onto the push chair although different fabrics. That was in 2004!

I took that buggy to a charity shop late last year, still plenty of use in it.

I was also lent (then given) a M&P travel system which (including the carry cot and car seat plays base) cost about £800, bought in 2002.

Depends on what you want and how much you can afford I guess! I have said for the last few years that when the time came I would get whatever I wanted. I considered most options when we were choosing. My favourite was the Stokke but ruled that out for practical reasons. In the end we went for the Uppababy Vista which was around the £650 mark with discount and is the Which bestbuy. We had to get car seat and base separately, but it comes with raincovers etc. We are having the car seat bits from my sister so no cost there.

Its one of those how long is a piece of string questions I reckon!

My most recent push chair, umbrella fold, including cosy toes (suitable from birth) should have cost £250.

That has no car seat or carry cot, just a buggy and footmuff.

I had a Quinny Buzz for DD. It was about £370 for base, seat and fluffy bag thing. It was then £120 for car seat and £100 for carry cot.

It was a short sighted purchase as I've just paid over £500 for an Oyster Max with extra seat to put DD and #2 in. Thankfully it will take the Maxi Cosi car seat so I don't need another of those.

£280 is very reasonable. You will use it loads and loads for at least 2 years! I'd use mine everyday if it wasn't for nursery days.

If you think you'd like another child though you might be best thinking ahead and getting something that can have an extra seat attached in the future.

Mine was £190 with buggy board/carrycot/seat/basket/footmuff but I got it secondhand.

I think £280 for a new buggy is pretty cheap. I got mine second hand, a mamas and papas urbo with bassinet and seat, with rain cover for £100. But we had to buy the maxi cost car seat with adaptors separately.

It just depends on your budget and what you need/want. For me the travel system was essential but some people swear by a sling and then an umbrella buggy.

Don't underestimate what you can get second hand and your money will go a lot further. The second hand stuff we've bought has been in really good condition.

We (or rather my excited and generous parents as GPs-to-be) paid £600 on a Bugaboo Bee with the cocoon (including rain cover). We also had to buy a separate car seat and adapters, adding around £150 to that.

Your option sounds like a bargain!

I think you can go too cheap and end up with a shitty pushchair that will need replacing. I've had pushchairs that cost £600+ and ones that cost £150 for everything. The best one I've ever had was £350 for everything, I felt that was a fair price to pay.

Can you easily afford the pushchair you would like? If you can then definitely go for it. Go for something cheap and you get something cheap iykwim

My DH hasn't been looking at prams, pushchairs or anything, so has no idea how much things cost - he obviously thinks I've gone for the most expensive one in the shop where if anything I've done the opposite

His dad keeps looking at ones on eBay (including second hand ones) and keeps pushing we get one from there! I'm not anti-eBay at all (I'm always on there) but I don't think I'm asking too much to want a new travel set that I purchase after looking round and seeing them with my own eyes as opposed to squinting at a small picture on a computer screen

The first pram we got was a M&P pram/Moses basket/rear or forward facing pushchair/car seat/ travel system combo thing; it was about £400 with some money off. We later bought an isofix base second hand to go with it, which cost about £20 I think.

Less than 18 months later when pregnant with dc2, we bought a phil and teds explorer with doubles kit, cocoon, etc. to push both dcs around in. That was about £500 in total I think, once we'd bought all the bits and bobs to go with it. Oh, and another £40 or similar for a buggy board a few months ago

We've since bought a maclaren techno xt, which lives in the car. That was about £200. We did try to buy a cheapy kiddicare buggy but ds could topple it so in the end we forked out for the maclaren.

I use the Phil and Teds on a daily basis. We gave the M&P to a family member (they still use it, four years later)

So no, I don't think £280 is unreasonable, but having written this down I've realised that I seem to be a pram whore

Exactly help - that's what I said to DH, that it will last years!! It will pay got itself! We can afford it no problem, the issue is he thinks that price is 'top end' and doesn't understand why need a 'top end' travel system. I think I need to take him pram shopping with me and let him look at the cost of all the modern travel system gadgets - my guess is he'll be begging me to go back to the shop with the £280 option

Mine was the mothercare extreme. Car seat, cosy toes and rain cover. Goes from nb upwards. Was £140 from the mothercare outlet brand new. Was £400 originally.

I also disagreed with dp about how much we would spend on this. We reached a compromise. This travel system for now and then a maclaren later on when the weather improves. This pram we will use for stables as we have ponies and the maclaren will be for best non muddy outings.

I'm looking forward to the maclaren I must admit. The big pram will be good for bad weather and off road but is a bit big for every day use.

So maybe consider that option. A cheaper choice now and a more expensive option later. £280 is very reasonable though tbh. What alternatives has your dh suggested?

We paid about £730 for our silver cross wayfarer, maxi cosi pebble car seat and adaptors. The pram came with carrycot and converts to push chair when ds is ready for it. We paid less in the end than the icandy peach i originally wanted would have cost x

Take him to a shop. Mother are or John lewis if you don't have specialist shop near you. He will soon see how much the actually cost.

My last pram was a m&p and mil still takes dd out in it most days and she is now 3yo.

I personally wouldn't buy 2nd hand from eBay but that is based on really bad experiences with faulty item.

Yy you need to take him to a few shops so he can see that £280 is not "top end". My dh was clueless (of course, everyone is when it's their dc1!), and it was only when we went actual shops that he began to see how expensive some of this baby stuff is.

You also need to go into shops to try the prams out, even if you then go and buy it online (but Mothercare price-matched our P&T) You need to see if the handles are high/low enough, if the turning circle is right for you, etc etc.

There are lots of good deals to be had on eBay too.

Out of interest which pushchair is it? You can get some really good bargains on eBay once you know what you want. It's not unreasonable to want to buy brand new though. At least with brand new you can go back to the shop with it if you have any problems with it.

Yes you definitely need to try them first, the £280 might feel like exactly that. You need to see what feels best, how heavy they are etc. I was convinced I would want the Bugaboo Buffalo but as soon as I clapped eyes on it in real life I was totally turned off

We spent £800 on a package that included Bugaboo Bee, newborn cacoon, cosy toes, maxi cosi pebble, family fix base and car seat adapters to put it on frame.

I thought it was a good deal it has been used practically daily in some way shape or form for past 20 months and will be for DC2 due in 6 weeks so money well spent IMO.

We spent 850 on uppababy vista which included carrycot, toddler seat, rain covers, mosquito covers (ha!), cup holder (ridiculous - used it once and nearly had coffee all over DD), car seat adaptors and price also included maxi cosi pebble car seat and family fix base. So yes, they cost a lot. Under 300 quid is good, and tell your DH you can sell it on eBay to recoup some of the cost.

Alternatively, buy it on eBay, then sell it again when you've finished with it and you'll get back most of what you paid for it.
