Pregnancy

Found out today I'm pregnant. Do I cancel my snowboarding trip

As title suggests really. Am 5 weeks pregnant (wasn't planned but we're happy). But am die to go snowboarding on Sunday.
has anyone had any experience of boarding in the early stages of pregnancy?
Am going with a huge group, so if I go and don't board, how do I go a whole week without telling anyone my secret?
Xxx

If you still want to go, feign a knee injury. I personally wouldn't board pregnant.

I would go, but that's me. Also I've been skiing since I was 3 and confident of my ability.

Is this your first pregnancy? Can understand your concern. You're the only person who can make this call.

Yes- first pregnancy (and first snowboarding trip- so am likely to fall over!)
a knee injury seems like a good idea.

Personally I'd go. Baby is protected by your pelvis until 12 weeks.

But that's me and its understandable if you don't want to board. If you're not going to board I wouldn't go. Ski resorts are boring if you're not skiing or drinking.

I went skiing at 10 wks pregnant , my consultant said that was ok as babe still sitting within the pelvis.

If its first time boarding you'd be on the nursery slopes so not going fast. When you fall on a board you tend to fall on your bum. Very small risk of someone going into you I guess.

I've guessing you'll be spending a lot of time sitting on your butt then..!

How are you going to get round the Apres ski?

im the same. im 10-11wks and due to go snowboarding on the 4th. I wont be even touching a board. im still learning and last year took soo many slams on the ice on the mountain as well as falling on the ice in town. not worth the risk. my gp said any fall is an impact which is not good at any stage of pregnancy. you will also be knackered without the snowboarding. I've filled my kindle & will be using netflix etc in the wifi cafes while the group is up the mountain

Honestly, for me it would depend on how desperately I wanted the baby. If it is a much longed for pregnancy and you would be heartbroken if you lost it, then I wouldn't take the risk. If it was unplanned, a bit of a surprise and your life would return to normal quickly if you miscarried then I'd probably go.

Chances are you and pregnancy will be fine but it is a risk.

I went skiing at 6 weeks pregnant. The baby is WELL protected at that age.

The things to watch out for is dehydration and altitude issues and you might want to go easy on the après ski. Morning sickness might also kick in a little.

I did a bit of skiing and a lot of sledging.

Congrats! Go on the trip anyway if that's what you want to do and say you're not feeling as the reason for not boarding? A similar thing happened to me. I found out i was pregnant a week before a hiking trip in the Highlands, 4 years ago. I was about 6 weeks pregnant at the time. My excuse found me as tHe motion sickness from the car trip did me in and I spent the entire weekend in the B&B reading a book and relaxing. I wouldn't risk it, even this early in. I take my dd on mini hikes now. The time will fly!

Take it easy. It's not the best idea. You'll be tired sick. & not able to drink. Can you cancel at no/low cost?

Went skiing at 8w pg with ds1. I did fall but didn't do any harm to ds. It was a stupid thing to do in my case as I had no appreciation for the relaxin hormone making your joints more mobile than usual. You can really do yourself an injury. I suffer from SPD in this and ds1 pregnancy. Don't know if skiing made this worse!

I took it easy, bunked off skiing in the afternoon and chilled in the chalet so I didn't make the most of highly expensive lift pass and ski hire.

Boarding you spend all your time falling on your bottom to learn. Might do yourself a back injury. Be less worried about baby than the potential for injury that causes you suffering longer term.

That said it was 4 years ago for me skiing now & not been able to ski since, so this trip could've your last chance for a long time!

After doing exactly what you have done, looking for advice and opinions online, I went boarding at 7 weeks into my second pregnancy. I'm a confident experienced boarder, I took things very easy, and was careful about dehydration. Despite knowing that baby was protected in my pelvis, and that I rarely fall, I was very nervous about the risk of someone else crashing into me, and enjoyed it a lot less than usual. If I was in the same situation again, I wouldn't go.

As a beginner, you will fall, a LOT. If you're worrying about affecting the baby, I can't imagine you enjoying it. I would cancel (if you can get at least some money back) or feign a knee/back injury if you go. You're not drinking because of the painkillers.

Take care

Can you learn to ski instead? Having tried both, my first week of skiing I fell over maybe twice, and not particularly "hard" and both times was when I was doing something bloody stupid/taking unnecessary risks deliberately. I had a two hour boarding taster session on the last day and fell over approximately forty thousand times, hard, and it hurt. All my injuries from that week were from the boarding session!

I've been skiing (indoor snowdome here in the UK) until 11 weeks pregnant after considering the risks - namely that until the uterus rises above the pelvis you'd have to pretty much fracture your pelvis to do any injury. But the relaxin is a real issue if you're likely to fall a lot and you could injure yourself a lot more than if you weren't pregnant.

Have skied at 20 weeks and 8 weeks respectively. Very gently, easy runs and afternoons off to avoid icy runs and post liquid lunch loons. It's a question of what you are comfortable with in terms of risk and your own skill level. A blow to the stomach area is tricky on skis, falling flat on your face in a board a bit easier perhaps but I have never boarded. Both times my doctors and midwives were fine with me skiing.
At 5 weeks I would go but après ski will be a big issue

I'd bale out to ski instead. I've been skiing in the first trimester and my dsis did having both of her dc, all early. Beware of loose joints and potential knee injuries. If you're utterly bricking it then feign an injury as someone else has said - and the painkillers mean you can't drink either Wink Wink
if you want to ski and not snowboard (hideous for spending a high percentage of your time sprawled in the floor) then ime resorts will let you swap. Also worth remembering that you don't want minor-ish injuries that require x ray... says I who broke a finger at 3wks pg with ds1 Blush
good luck whatever you decide Smile

I'm an experienced skier. Pals are going next week and I'll be 21 weeks then, and there is no way I'd chance it now I'm getting big. However your holiday is SO close you've found out about pregnancy relatively early, imagine you could've gone and boarded and drunk and then found out. Some people don't get on with boarding. Perhaps you could do it for a day or two then just say you don't really like it any more, get your money back on your equipment hire and your ski pass and spend some time in the resort. That said ski pass and board hire are probably £300! So a knee injury could be a good idea! Gosh I don't know. I did half a days boarding and fell over lots not sure how stressed I would have been if I were pregnant! Are there things to do in the resort? Swimming pools usually, possibly day trips to nice cities - Vienna of Austria, Turin if Italy, Geneba if Switzerland or France. Lyon is nice too. There's often s cinema in resorts if they are big! Where are you going? I've been to 15 or so of best well bowl resorts. Let me now! Ski holiday is a lot of money if you're not going to ski/board. Argh! What a decision! Gosh I don't think I've been helpful. Just a 6am wittier from me!

Ugh. 6am typos to boot! Best KNOWN resorts.

If this is your first go at snowboarding then if I were you I'd feign injury. You can still have a fun holiday, get some outdoor time and enjoy the après. I went snowboarding first time this year and spent the majority of the first 3 days falling and slamming down hard on my arse
Or wrists. This is the only way to learn snowboarding! The baby is well protected but I personally think this is too much repetitive impact.

You'll be exhausted too so you can get some sneaky naps in whilst the others are skiing! Look up some sting painkillers in google to see which you can't drink whilst on. Codeine perhaps? And you're sorted for a drinking excuse too :)

I wouldn't. And sorry but the post above that says 'if you don't think you'd be too heartbroken if you had a miscarriage I'd go' makes me feel very uncomfortable and a bit sick Hmm

I was skiing last Easter - didnt know at the time but I was 20 weeks pregnant!

I would still go.

I would go; the only way you would hurt the pregnancy is if you sustain severe internal injuries.

I'm in the exact same boat. We leave tonight & we had a BFP yesterday (4 weeks & can't take the smiles off our faces). i am a beginner/medium skiier.

We have done a lot of reading of MN posts on this matter. DH has been worried about this since we started trying.

Seems pretty consistent advice from what I've read. Docs say its fine because its so protected. You would have to have an almighty traumatic accident to cause a MC from skiing from what i can gather.

I think it more about listening to your body. I don't know if you have skiied bf ( & you are swapping to snowboarding) or if totally new to skiing and snowboarding but I always find skiing so exhausting (and I am reasonably fit person).

Snowboarding from what I can gather is a real pain in the behind (literally and figuratively). I've known good skiiers who have really struggled with their 1st of snowboarding becuase of the amount of time spend on their bottoms.

So, I think if you are a total newbie, then maybe opt for skiing instead (don't buy the whole week pass and take the hit on booking a day at a time) or the total relaxation break option (kindle, mags, spa). If you have a bit of skiing experience, stick with skiing or if you are an experienced skiier and are desparate to try snowboarding, then again, don't try for the whole week (but a few days and then buy days here and there if you feel up to).

Now apres' ski is another matter. If anyone has any good excuses for not drinking when holidaying with a big group. I would almost always drink socially so it is going to be obvious when I say no thanks. The old "Im on antibiotics one" seems a little too obivous.
