I'm five weeks pg and am going for an early scan because I've got type one diabetes. I'm scared though, in case there's bad news :-(

Good luck. I don't know if you've had a scan that early before, but it will almost certainly be fanny-cam (vaginal probe) which is fine, much less uncomfortable than a smear test. At 5 weeks they should see sac and yolk sac, possibly a foetal pole but probably not a heartbeat, that normally starts sometime in week 6. Def not bad news if it's not present at 5 weeks anyway. Hope all is as it should be.

Hi bakingtins - my scan will be next week so I'll be six weeks. Don't know if that's fanny cam or not? Am trying to stay positive as have no reason not to be!

Well, on the day I have it I will be 5+6, so perhaps still no heartbeat yet.

Yes, probably. I had fanny cam up to 9 weeks, though they can often see something via abdomen, usually not detailed enough to get their measurements when foetus is tiny. You might be lucky and see a HB at 6 weeks, but don't panic if not.

Okay, thank you. I thought the heart started beating at around 5 weeks so expected to be able to pick it up but I guess not.

Hi I've had lots of early scans and they can't normally detect a hearbeat at 5 weeks it's too early, we had to wait until 8 weeks for another scan to detect the actual heartbeat. It is nerve wrecking, but if there is a problem it's better to get it detected early than wait for the inevitable. Also had gestational diabetes with first pregnancy but was managed well by the medical team and they've been great for my 2nd pregnancy, currently 32 weeks and no gestational diabetes (yet). Good Luck.

Thank you. Am assuming it will be too early for them to pick up everything but will be nice to get some reassurance.

Hi Vjones! I had a scan with dd at 6 weeks and the scan was carried out through tummy. (Think it depends on a few things, if you're overweight more likely to go vaginally etc.) when I had scan you saw something that resembled a fried egg :) and I did see a heart beat although they told me not to worry if I didn't. Good luck hope all goes well!!

Hi fatty - I will be 5+6 on Monday when I have it. Have been told it's a dating scan but not sure why my diabetes means I need one this early. Can I ask why you had an early one?

I can't remember exactly how far along I was but know it was 6 weeks but not sure + how many days!! I had one because I had some bleeding and they wanted to check everything was okay!! Luckily is was! I'm not sure why you'd have to have an early one either? Ask while you're there :)

I know diabetic women do have early scans so perhaps it's just to check that everything's okay.

According to doctor google, it will be a viability scan which I believe is to check that development is normal.

I went for one that early, and was lucky enough to see a heartbeat flickering away. I know how scary it is, but I just kept telling myself that one way or another, I would reach the finish line one day. I hope it all goes really well for you x

Hi vjones is this your 1st? Im sure all will be well Smile Im also a type 1 diabetic and had early scans with both my dc. 1st at what I thought was 6 weeks but was actually 8 weeks and 2nd thought I was 7 weeks but was just under 6 weeks I never asked why i had early scans perhaps there is a minimum no of weeks for the antenatal clinic as after that 1st scan/appt Iwwas seen v regularly at the diabetic pregnancy clinic as it automatically puts you in high risk group silver lining is additional scans as well as early 12 week and 20 week I had growth scans from 26 weeks. There is another thread for tyoe 1 diabetics its gone a bit quiet as lots of us have had our babies but the ladies are so supportive and give out fab advice. Hope your scan goes well Smile

Heart starts beating around 6 weeks IIRC -- I've had a scan at 6w2d before and been told that they would hope to see a heartbeat at that point but not to panic if they didn't, because it could still be a bit early. They wouldn't schedule a scan for me before 6w2d as they said chances of seeing heartbeat were too low and they'd probably have to do another one.

Well, don't know what they will be looking for at 5w6d then!

They should be able to see sac and fetal pole, and might see the heartbeat if you're lucky. I'm just surprised that they aren't giving it another couple of days.
