I'm having my first scan tomorrow (12 wks) and I'm hoping for a bit of a nose around the maternity unit. Any tips for questions I should ask?

many thanks,

Pumpkin x

Hi, chances are you won't be able to go round the unit tomorrow you will probably just be scanned. Most units do organised tours of their units and you should be able to get info on when these are. You normally get shown round in a group with others and a midwife shows you everything. Maternity units are normally locked to stop people wandering in and out hence they have these tours.

Thanks - I thought that would probably be the case. Even so, is there anythins I should be asking the midwife at this stage?

In my area you don't see a midwife at the 12 week scan, you are just scanned by a sonographer and she works out the date for your 20 week scan.
Unless you have any major issues or concerns then I can't really think of anything specific you could ask, obv if you've had bleeding or anything you should be in touch with GP or community midwife. It may be better to wait till your 20 wk scan because , in my hospital anyway, you go through it all with a midwife afterwards and she books you into the system for your delivery.

usually at booking appointments they do all sorts of test to ensure all seems ok. Ie tests for downs and hiv etc.

This gives you the chance to speak to the mv one on one. I don't have suggestions of what you should ask as it all depends on what you want to know..! It may be worthwhile asking them to include you in on parentcraft classes (usually around 34 weeks) and a tour of the maternity unit. If you have any concerns so far then raise them now. But usually you are given a contact number for your ward should you have any issues over the next 28 weeks. HTH. Congrats btw..!!
