Pregnancy

Brown discharge and pain at 21 weeks and no one will see me

I have had this before at 11 weeks and 17 weeks. At 11 weeks I was scanned and told my placenta was covering my cervix, so this was probably the reason.

At 17 weeks, they scanned me (I had to go to A and E as the pain was horrendous and the midwife on the phone kept telling me to have a bath and a nap), said nothing about placenta, even when I asked (I was steadfastly ignored twice and the third time snapped at and told that they were busy), tested my urine, came up with a minuscule reading and deemed it a UTI and sent me away with antibiotics, even though I am sure it wasn't a UTI.

I phoned the hospital this morning, same thing. Told by midwife to have a bath and that I couldn't be seen by anyone now as the labour ward will not see you under 24 weeks. I told her the pain was horrendous and there was brown discharge, she kept saying have a bath and relax and only go to the hospital if it was bright red blood.

So now I don't know what to do. DO i just sit here in pain and wait and see if the bleeding gets worse? baby is kicking away still.

At my 20 week scan they gave me no info about my placenta, apart from that it is partially covering the OS.

It's all been a bit crap and I really don't feel well today.

When I say the reading for the UTI, I mean they showed me the dip stick, one of the squares was only slightly discoloured. I have had worse at GP appointments and was just told to try and drink more, not put on anti biotics.

Sorry you're having such a bad time Sad

Do you have a community mw you can ring? Or does your hospital have an early pregnancy unit you can contact as they may be able to see you?

If you have no joy with either of those and your pain is bad I would go to a&e and sit there until you are seen. You shouldn't be left with awful pain Sad

Take care and let us know x

EPU won't see me. They got so shitty at me when A and E sent me up to them at 17 weeks. A and E sent me there as when they called maternity, the midwife was a cow who told them that she had already told me to have a bath and she didn't know why I'd gone in. It was lucky that there was a nice dr on A and E who could see I was distressed and in pain and he felt sorry for me.

There is no community midwives, just the ones at the hospital and the EPU is by a and e or midwife referral only.

That's really rubbish Sad

With that in mind - go to a&e and just tell them you did have a bath and things are no better. They can't turn you away from a&e so you'll at least get seen by someone. X

well they can see you before 24 weeks because myself and friends have had issues so she just sounds like a twat.....

But I agree with above, to help create less drama just go to a&e say you had a bath but it remained the same/got worse and insist on being seen.

And then complain about the midwife- that really is a bad attitude, what do they do if people go into labour begore 24weeks? Its just absurd, people see them and can be admitted with hyperemis (sp?) like my friend...

hope everything is ok with you and bump and it's nothing serious Thanks

Go to a&e say you took the bath and paracetamol etc.

What shitty treatment :(

whereisthewitch · 20/11/2013 14:52

The treatment you are getting is shocking! ! I went to a&e with a chest infection at 21 weeks and they made a huge fuss over me, I wouldn't care less if they are narky with you, if they are just say " do you mean to be so rude and make this more upsetting for me".

That will shut them up.

Rockchick1984 · 20/11/2013 14:54

Awful treatment! However most labour wards won't admit you until 24 weeks so that's pretty standard - it should be A&E or EPU prior to this.

Who do you see for your antenatal appointments? Can't you contact them?

The line I called was the main midwife line at the hospital. They are the ones I see.

This is disgusting. I'm really cross for you. I totally agree with whereisthewitch, I think you need to go to A & E, tell them you've followed MW's advice but that things aren't any better. Take somebody with you to support you and to help make sure that you are seen.

How are you loopylouu? Hope you're getting seen at a&e and all is ok x

Do you know this really annoys me. They say to many people are going to A&E and it's over run. But when your asking for help there giving you no other option.

It's all very well them telling you to have a bath but you have a baby inside and feel helpless.

Like the other ladies said go to A&E they will have to see you.

I hope your ok and let us know how you get on

You have probably already doing something but just incase you aren't I would try and speak to your GP or an out of hours GP. If they are worried they can refer you in to be assessed by someone. It should mean you can bolas a&be

Bypass a&e (autocorrect!)

Complete rubbish. They should have a triage you can go to. I went in at 18 weeks and 21 weeks and so on. Only problem they have at young gestation is strapping you to the monitor.

I can't believe how shocking they have all behaved.

TeaandHobnobs · 20/11/2013 18:50

Sounds like your hospital doesn't have an antenatal ward, is that right? Are there any other hospitals in the area you could go to? You need to be seen by antenatal triage at this stage, I would have thought.

Pinupgirl · 20/11/2013 18:58

Go to the hospital!!! I had this at exactly the same stage and it turned out I had an incompetent cervix and was 3cm dilated. I didn't even phone I went straight to the hospital and luckily I had a very experienced midwife who spotted my dilated cervix on the scan that showed baby was fine.

I hope that you are getting seen at the moment and all well but please do put in a complaint.

Well I went to A&E, they sent me to the EPU.

They didn't scan me. Looked at my records and said I was due a rescan at 32 weeks. Said to rest while there was bloody discharge and to come back if the blood was bright red. Take paracetamol. And that was it.

Said they wouldn't do an internal due to my low lying placenta.

It's a large hospital - St Mary's in paddington, so I thought I'd be treated better in this pregnancy going there.

Sorry for the ubrupt update. I'm tired, pissed off, worried, still in pain and have an 11 year old son who's playing up about doing his homework.

That is an effing disgrace thank God I was never treated so badly, OP I'd keep ringing them until they scan you! If you were 24 weeks they'd bend over backwards, I hate this mentality that just because a fetus isn't viable it's not worth looking after!

DoItTooJulia · 20/11/2013 20:30

Ask to speak to the supervisor of midwives.

Persistence is the key here.

Good luck OP, hope you feel better soon.

loopylouu then I'd suggest trying the antenatal day unit at St Thomas' tomorrow - it may not be "your" hospital but I think they'd see you...

I second the suggestion of trying St Thomas's. They have an EPU and I always found them very helpful and kind.

Report
loopylouu · 21/11/2013 08:49

Hi - St. Thomas' is miles away from me. So is St. Mary's really. I am only there as I am swapping to private care for the birth at 36 weeks, not there, but at Queen Charlottes (which still isn't even my nearest hospital!) and the private consultant I will be seeing does NHS from St Mary's.

She thought if I booked in there that she would be able to keep an eye on me and try and see me sometimes before I swapped to private, as I had a horrendous experience in my first pregnancy.

However, it was a flat no from the hospital and she is allowed nothing to do with me, so her hands are tied incase she gets accused of favouritism.

St. Mary's and Queen Charlottes are 'sister' hospitals and I have been to both, they are both a bit crap.

The bleeding has stopped and the pain has lessened.

loopylouu - maybe see your doctor (or some other gynaecologist/obstetrician) privately? These things happen and hopefully it's nothing serious. But if there is something wrong it may be worth having it properly checked, if you can afford it?
