Please help.... I'm a first time mum and currently 28 weeks and having severe upper stomach pains, sickness and heartburn I know the heartburn is normal but I haven't experienced any sickness up until now, I'm really worried because along with having a low lying placenta I also have been told the baby is lying low. I've taken parecetemol but it's not helping??

I've no advice as such but didn't want to read and run!

Have you tried antacids? I would be inclined to phone NHS direct if the pain is severe.

Hope you feel well soon x

volvocowgirl · 17/11/2013 04:03

Gallstones? I'd try the GP out of hours service. Hope you're feeling better soon.

ZingWantsGin · 17/11/2013 04:39

go to A&E and get checked.

ask them to rule out pre-eclampsia.

runawaysimba · 17/11/2013 04:43

Yes please get checked out - when you are pregnant, no one is going to think you're being a bother over nothing. Severe pain isn't normal.

GreenSunrise · 17/11/2013 05:20

Another plea to get checked out today. I had pre eclampsia and hellp syndrome and my only obvious symptom was a severe pain at the top of my stomach / bottom of my ribs. The chances are that you don't haveuthese conditions but if you do you need to be treated sstraight way. It will be very quick for the doctors to check with bp check., urine test and blood test. Please don't wait until Monday or think that you are bothering anyone unnecessarily.

Belle2808 · 17/11/2013 13:13

Thanks everyone, I'm going to go and get checked out today x

how are you doing?

Belle2808 · 17/11/2013 18:04

Just an update, my community midwives are all on the sick or a day off so phoned maternity assessment and told that due to this it's prob best I just try paracetamol, a warm bath and sleep and phone bak tomorrow. Is that normal? Can understand if I am maybe over reacting but surely if it's serious they should at least try and reassure me :s x

I would not be happy at all, that is ridiculous.
go to A&E and say you are worried it might be pre-eclampsia.

they should check your blood pressure, urine for protein and if that comes back positive you need a blood test.

what other symptoms do you have?

Belle2808 · 17/11/2013 18:42

Other than the pain and sickness I'm fine, just had my urine and bp done on Thursday and all seemed normal. If the pain continues tonight then I will defo just go to a&e x

I don't think you should be happy about what the maternity assessment unit has said. I would phone them back or take yourself to a&e and be insistent that they check you for pre-eclampsia. I had very high bp and protein in my urine when my mw checked but other than that no symptoms apart from the pain. I didn't have any swelling, headaches or disturbed vision. They should be checking that the cause of your pain isn't anything serious.

GreenSunrise · 17/11/2013 19:25

Sorry, baby needed burping! Smile

The point that I was trying to make was that if they say to you that you don't need to come in because you don't have any other pre-eclampsia symptoms then that is not a valid argument because not everyone gets the standard symptoms, as in my case. Any pain which is bad enough that paracetamol is not helping should be investigated IMO.

DoesZingBumpLookBigInThis · 17/11/2013 19:36

Green

I couldn't agree more and you said it better then me.

(burping baby disturbing your MN time - how inconsiderate! Wink Grin )

CrispyFB · 17/11/2013 19:41

They're being negligent Sad If there is something wrong with you it's not just going to go away because they're short-staffed!

It could be "just" severe heartburn, in which case Gaviscon may help in the short term and if it persists there are prescription drugs such as omeprazole you can try. Nobody should have to live with that amount of pain if it is avoidable. And if it is gallstones it is better to find that out too.

Definitely consider A&E. Far better to get checked out and told all is fine than the alternative.

DoesZingBumpLookBigInThis · 17/11/2013 19:50

weirdly I seem to remember that it could be a UTI. I might be completely wrong.

you must be checked out OP, brushing you off like that is appalling.

Belle2808 · 17/11/2013 23:14

Just an update guys, got a different midwife when I phoned back maternity assessment, been brought in and admitted! Everything is ok with baby (thankfully) but I could possibly have gallstones or appendicitis. Thanks so much for the advice I probably wouldn't have pursued it otherwise x

Well done Belle, you're in the right place. Thank goodness your baby is ok.

DoesZingBumpLookBigInThis · 17/11/2013 23:26

good job Belle, glad you went. (high fives!Wink )
I hope you'll be ok soon.

And never ever again accept to be brushed off, please.

GreenSunrise · 18/11/2013 02:52

Really glad to hear that you are being looked after properly now Belle I hope you feel better soon Thanks x

DoesZingBumpLookBigInThis · 18/11/2013 09:16

how are you doing today?

Belle2808 · 19/11/2013 10:55

Hey everyone! Got out of hospital yesterday, ruled out al lot of things but unfortunately didn't get to the bottom of what is actually causing the pain. So lots of painkillers and lots of rest seem to be their advice. X
