spotting?

I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my second child. I've woken up this morning to what I think is spotting. I have a small amount of blood mixed with cm when I wipe, it's a bit like you sometimes get before your period starts. I've felt different the last couple of days too - I lost that awful tiredness and have been up past 11 the last two nights which just felt wrong. I'm not having any cramps although the area feels tender - I don't know if I'm just imagining that though.

What happens now - do I call the maternity unit and see if I can get an early scan or do I just wait and see what happens?

If I were you I'd phone up and try to get a scan just for reassurance.

But try not to worry, I had a bleed at 9 weeks when I was pregnant and was so upset and panicked but everything was fine. I think DS must have been getting himself properly settled in!

When it happened and I spoke to people, it turned out loads and loads of people have bleeding or spotting while pregnant and it all turns out fine.

Give them a call though and get their advice. Hope you're ok.

Hi hoot, would you be due a period today if you weren't pregnant? A friend of mine bled a little when her period was due but it was fine.
Call your epu - they might over you a scan but it probably won't be till Monday.
A bit of spotting is usually fine though!

Thank you tortillas - I am panicking a bit. I've been feeling a bit worried about this pregnancy anyway as it just seemed too easy. We tried for nearly a year with my dd but this time it just happened. It seemed too good to be true.

I'll give them a call - thank you.

I think my period would have been due two days ago misshoohaa. It would be good if it was that.

Just spoke to them and they said to rest up but if the bleeding gets worse I can either go to A&E or call my out of hours gp. I just want to know Sad

I had two bouts of bleeding in the first trimester, both when my period was due. The EPU were not very helpful the first time, and told me what to expect if I was MCing. Second time they scanned me and everything was fine!

Now 20 weeks, and had a successful scan yesterday!

Try not to worry but do relax and take it easy. I think it is more common than people realise to spot a bit.

Hi Hoot. I would just go to a&e. I am 6weeks today and started spotting on Thursday. I was/still am a bit terrified as have had a previous mc so my midwife told me to go for the reassurance as stressing out over it does no good.
they were great at hospital and sent me straight across to the epu where I had an internal exam and am now booked in for a scan on monday. just talking face to face with the doctor in the epu helped relax me a bit more so its definitely worth it if you are still worried.
I had the same spotting as you and they said it is really normal....funny how no one tells you this before!!
xx

Go to A and E. I bleed/spot all the time through early pregnancy but always go and get checked out. It's not like you can put it out your mind is it, and the people in a and e won't mind at all. At 8 weeks they should be able to do an external scan and you'll see heartbeat and everything if it's there. Go go go.

I'm just lying here in bed sobbing! It's good to hear all your stories where everything worked out though. I'm getting little crampy feelings now, they aren't strong but they are there. I want to know whats going on but am scared in case it will confirm what I think. I'm going to head downstairs, have a cup of tea and watch some mind numbing on telly I think. See how things are in an hour or so.

I had small bleeds at 7 weeks and again at 10 weeks. I also felt a little tender around the stomach area but it wasn't really a crampy feeling. The episode at 7 weeks lasted about 36 hours whereas the episode at 10 weeks lasted about 3 days. On both occasions it was light spotting of dried/brown blood with the odd stringy bit. The EPU scanned me on both occasions and the baby was fine. I also had a bleed at 14 weeks but on that occasion it was a huge bleed of fresh red blood - it scared the absolute crap out of me. I went straight to hospital and the EPU examined me internally and did a scan and again, baby was fine. I continued to bleed for about 4 days but it was minimal and just old/dried blood. I had a repeat scan 2 weeks later to make sure baby was still ok and he was.

The midwife thought my first episode at 7 weeks may have been breakthrough bleeding which can happen when your period would have been due. When I was bleeding at 7 and 10 weeks I was told to completely rest and not go to work until 48 hours after the bleeding had stopped.

Bleeding doesn't always mean bad news so try not to worry too much yet. Pop a sanitary pad or panty liner in so you can monitor things closely and if the pain worsens or the blood flow increases I would visit A&E x

Hi hoot.

I had spotting for about 3 weeks from 6.5 - 9ish weeks. I was convinced I was loosing the baby. But I managed to get my midwife refer me to epu and I had an internal scan and there was a heartbeat. I had to be signed off work for 2 weeks as I was such a mess with it all.
My midwife said that it could be implantation blood that has been sitting, that has become dislodged.
I'm now 26 weeks nearly.. so please don't loose hope.

Thank you LST and writer, I'm feeling more positive than earlier. The cramping has stopped and I've had no more bleeding. I can't believe the two of you bled for so long. That must have been terrifying. I'm so pleased all have you have gone on to have successful pregnancies.

I'm going to keep on resting up I think unless anything changes. My DD was going to see her Nana today anyway so the house is nice and quiet. My booking in appointment is on Tuesday so hopefully nothing else will happen between now and then.

Hi

In my 2nd pregnancy with dd I had full achy feelings from start then from 5 weeks got bloody cm bright red brown dark red almost all colours then again at 6,7 and 9 weeks. I then had scariest bleed at 14 weeks where I was told I had a haematoma but this was apparently incorrect at a follow up scan following more blood at almost 15 weeks. At this point I was told I had a cervical erosion which just means a few extra cells that bleeds easily and had this frequently till 32 weeks I was closely monitored anyway due to other health issues but had to attend straight away from 12 weeks due to being rh negative.

The result is now 6 months old and a healthy baby Smile

Glad to hear you are feeling positive now! Tell the midwife at your booking how you feel and she might refer you for a scan anyway, especially if it was red blood.

HootShoot · 19/10/2013 22:34

I'm still trying to stay positive but I started bleeding again about 6.30. Its fresh red blood now and I'm having periodtype pains. I spoke to a midwife who said there was nothing I could do and not to go to A&E unless the cramps get really painful or the bleeding is heavy enough that it's running. I think she's probably right and I didn't really fancy A&E on a Saturday night. It is getting more painful but not unbearable. It's not looking good though I think.

Oh dear - I'm sorry to read this. It's awful being told there is nothing they can do but sadly it's true. There is always hope though - have they offered you a scan now in order to check how things are?

when I had my bleed at 10 weeks it started late on a Friday night and when I rang the EPU they pretty much gave me the same advice they gave you and explained that over the weekend they don't offer scans Hmm I did get one on the upcoming Wednesday though but it felt so long to wait.

Report
HootShoot · 19/10/2013 22:49

No they haven't offered me one or said anything really. I'm wondering whether to go to A&E anyway tomorrow or to just wait until Tuesday when I see the midwife anyway. I want to know but am scared to know. The cramps probably aren't a great sign though are they?

My doctor asked me when I had my first bleed at 7 weeks if I was having cramps but I found it hard to explain how it actually felt - it was more like a constant dull ache. However, crampy and achey feelings can be a normal part of pregnancy too, it is all such guess work.

When I had my latest bleed at 14 weeks (lots of fresh red blood) I went straight to the EPU and they told me that if I experience more bleeding then to go straight back to them as it is a 24/7 service. They said there is very little point in going to A&E as they probably wouldn't carry out a scan anyway. However, I have seen some women on here say that they were given scans in A&E so it may vary from hospital to hospital.

If I were you, regardless of how things go overnight, ring your EPU in the morning and ask them if they can book you in for a scan. My EPU has always been brilliant (I've had 3 scans due to bleeding) and have never made me feel uncomfortable about asking for one. I'm surprised actually that it hasn't actually been suggested to you. Hopefully your EPU can see you early in the week, or failing that is there anywhere locally to you where you can have a private scan? I had one of these for reassurance and it cosy me £50 although some places can be much more expensive.

So sorry to hear that none of us can say for certain. When I had my bleed at 14 weeks I researched haematoma and quite a few ladies had some cramping when there were losing blood especially if they were a tad dehydrated. If I remember correctly some of them bled frequently and fairly heavily while some had been told they had this with no bleeding at all so it either bleeds out or reabsorbs. The general advise was to rest and drink plenty fluids. Obviously cant say it is that just a possibility. Not sure if they would do it at 8 weeks but in maternity triage the doctor used a portable scanner on me it was a sunday but I was 14 weeks not sure if that makes a difference Thanks

Thank you writer - I really need help getting this all straight in my head and you are definitely doing this for me. The pain is just like a period pain cramp, it was tender feeling this morning but is now a definite cramp that comes and goes.

I know the community midwives are available to talk to tomorrow so maybe I should phone them and ask about a scan. There is a private place near me that do scans too, a friend of mine used them recently, so if I get told to wait it out by the midwife tomorrow, I could try and get a private scan. I really feel for you that you had to go through this so many times.

I am six week pregnant today and have been spotting since Thursday. I have had dull lower back pain and cramps. I do not have another appointment until Oct. 29. When I confirmed pregnancy, my doctor told me that I might experience bleeding, so I have not called her. (I am 40, almost 41 - no children) I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing a similar situation. Any advice you can share? Hoot, I will be thinking of you! XhugsX

I am really struggling with this, I called the community midwives this morning. First I got told off by the receptionist who said I shouldn't be calling if I hadn't been booked in. Then a midwife spoke to me and said it didn't sound good and I needed to rest up and wait. Wait for what? I asked about a scan and she said it was closed at the weekend but if it got worse I could go to A&E. They obviously don't want you to go but I can't bear sitting here doing nothing. I'm going to leave it a few hours then make a decision I think.

Cramps stopped about 7 this morning but I am still bleeding fresh blood when I wipe.

Hopefully your spotting is all normal and fine gretchen.
