which pads???

Ok Im still a little way off my due date but am starting to get a list together in my mind of what I need to stock up on for me once baby is here. I know that I will need pads and PLENTY of them but which ones?? I know lochia is different to a period but after suffering from anemia inducing periods as a teenager I dont want to have to face any accidents or leak especially as we will be in a new flat with a new bed or when we have visitors. All the maternity pads Ive seen dont have wings, ordinary sanitary towels dont look thick enough and Ive even seen people write that they used Tena pads as they are very thick and absorbant??? And how do you use two towels at a time like people have said to do, one on top of the other, next to each other, one at the front one at the back overlapping?? Its all so confusing and abit scary to be honest!

I bought loads of different ones and ended up liking sainsburys nighttime wingless sanitary pads the best. I hate wings though.

Tbh I didn't need nearly as many as I thought. I have heavy periods and I didn't bleed nearly as much as a period. It just went on for a bit longer

I was thinking of just getting a fair few packs of the thick kotex night time ones. I would prefer wings just as a bit of added protection but I guess if there thick and you have to change them really frequently then its not going to make much difference.

I used Boots own brand and they were ok.

Mothercare do pads with wings. Don't use sanitary towels as the chemicals present am infection risk, although could use a sanitary towel with wings then pop a maternity pad over the top (extra padding, also nice just after birth :) )

Actual maternity towels are quite nice because they are thick and provide a bit of cushioning, which is most welcome if you have stitches! Some of the night time towels I found too thin - absorbency fine, but no padding. Lochia can go on for a few weeks, but after a bit of heaviness for the first day or two are often much lighter than a period. It's not like having your period for a month iyswim!

Two at a time, one front one back, overlapping in the middle. Gives you more coverage and also more padding in the middle where you need it most. I did that for the first few days. After q couple of weeks the thinner maternity pads you can get in boots or mothercare were perfectly adequate for me.

Asda little Angels maternity towels are great and you get a pack of 10 for 98p. Everyone I know uses these as they are cheap but do the job.

I've just got 2 packs of the thick wingless ones, you overlap them back to front but the bleeding eases off a lot after a few days and sanitary towels are fine after that. x

I used the aloe Vera towels with wings from mothercare, they were brilliant.

I've used Asda or Tesco own, not found much difference between brands tbh. I use three at once at first (although this baby will be my 6th labour and lochia has been heavier each time) and sort of have one at the front and two at the back, overlapping in the middle and at the sides, if that makes any sense at all?

After the initial heavy bleed I find Always long night time with wings are fine.

You could always put a pad on your bed if you're worried about your mattress, Pampers do bedmats for children that are very similar to what they use on the beds in hospital.

I used pads when I ran out but they leaked and were not as comfortable.

I've had 5 babies, expecting my 6th.

When I had my first 2 dc thin pads didn't exist.

I've only ever bought 1 or 2 packs of maternity towels& then used the smallest sanitary towels I could buy.
I hate sanitary towels- I dread those weeks after the birth, more then the actual birth!

How could sanitary towels cause infection? Does everyone use maternity towels for weeks on end?

Is that really true, Rockchick84? This is my fourth baby and I have never heard that before (and have used normal nighttime sanitary towels each time without ill-effect )

That's what I was told at NHS antenatal classes Sleep I've never tried it for myself - I just stuck to maternity pads!

I thought about getting those Bunnylion but thought it might be abit ott, at the same time dont want to feel like im gonna be leaking all over the place especially at night laying in bed :S

I like asda ones, the boots feel really stiff and uncomfortable to me. The asda ones are really soft and comfy, not a bad price either. I've not had my baby yet, but had a couple of labour scares so have tried them out early!

Do it. You'll have enough on your mind without having to worry about leaking on your clothes or the bed.

Not the most glamourous additions to your wardrobe but highly recommend, just makes life easier.

But avoid hospital knickers - totally useless!

I've bought 2 packs of the asda maternity pads for 1st couple of days then some normal night time sanitary pads for after (worked after previous births!) I've also bought a pack of bed maternity pads from boots, I'll put one under my sheet shortly (I'm 37 + 3) in case waters go at night, and then sleep on them for the first gew nights at home after birth, they were 3 for 2 with pads, breast pads etc.

Kotex nighttime pads are lovely (especially after the first few days) - very soft like having a small pillow between your legs!

Hmm I guess I'll just have to stock up on anything thick for the 1st few days then use long sanitary towels after.
