Hi, according to my first scan I would now be 19 weeks 2 days, according to my dates (which I am certain of) I am 18 weeks 2 days. I haven't felt any movement from baby at all. Thought there was something the other day, the kind of strange sinking/summersaulting feeling you get in your tummy when you trip or get bad news - but actually I now think that churning feeling was just a result of being really stressed about some other stuff and wasn't the baby moving.

I know everyone gets these things at different stages, but it seems like most people talk about getting the bubbling/popping feeling at about 16 weeks and still nothing for me :(

I would ask your midwife just to check heartbeat for your sanity. I didn't hear dd until about 21 weeks iirc, and then I only very rarely felt her moving and kicking - she was transverse and then breach and I always felt I missed out. I always felt relief once I'd heard her heartbeat at my midwife appts.

She is now a bouncing lively 8mo.

Do you have an anterior placenta? I did and didn't feel movements until around week 24 which made me freak out so I bought a doppler and listened to the baby's heartbeat for reassurance. Also, I rang DAU and they monitored me a few times which was great. As they used to say to me, don't suffer in silence. Call your midwife or local hospital and they will more than likely check you out to make sure everything is fine.

Cookiepants · 30/07/2013 16:52

Hi Jingle,

Don't panic! I have an anterior placenta and didn't feel a thing until 27-28 weeks and even then not everyday. A colleague of mine ( anterior placenta as well) didn't feel her dd move her entire pregnancy. Ask about placenta position at your 20 week scan. My MW said movement can be so hit and miss which is why they don't advise you 'count the kicks' until 28 weeks or so.

jinglebellmel · 30/07/2013 16:55

They didn't mention anything about an anteror placenta at the 12 weeks scan, so I guess not, but not really sure. I have my 20 week scan on Tuesday next week, so I may as well hold out till then I suppose. Keep lying every night, really concentrating and hoping to feel something, but no luck so far.

I bet you've got an anterior placenta which means you're not likely to feel much until around 22-24 week mark, this was the case for me. However just to put your mind at ease why don't you contact midwife so she can let you hear the heartbeat. Also that feeling you described probably was some movement.

tumbletumble · 30/07/2013 16:56

I don't think I felt anything until about 20 weeks. 16 weeks sounds early to me!

SirDoris · 30/07/2013 16:57

Could be that the placenta is at the front. Completely normal but means that you don't feel much movement.
But definitely ring your midwife. That's what they're there for. Is your 20 week scan soon?

scratchandsniff · 30/07/2013 16:57

I don't think they can tell where your placenta is going to lie until 20 week scan.

EmB1715 · 30/07/2013 17:10

I didn't feel any definite movement until 19ish weeks and many don't feel any for a while after that. Don't worry yet!

Tulipsandbuttercups · 30/07/2013 18:43

im 18+3 still no movement yet. I had a cervical length scan today and I mentioned no movement. They were not concerned x

RobotHamster · 30/07/2013 18:46

This time I felt movement at just before 20 weeks. That sinking lurching thing you felt is likely movement, but just not definite enough yet.

Am 23 weeks now and I am being absolutely pummeled. :)

RobotHamster · 30/07/2013 18:47

Posterior placenta here btw - I just didn't feel it until right before 20w scan (3rd pg too so I know what to look for)

Pipparivers · 30/07/2013 18:52

Are you overweight? This can affect how early you feel movement from the outside. Some people I think just don't recognise the sensation of movement until it is much more pronounced. At this stage it could still pass as wind.

sarahleanne · 30/07/2013 19:57

if it is your first baby, 16 weeks is definitely early to feel definite movement.
I don't think I felt my first until about 19/20 weeks .
trust me before you know it you will be getting prodded and poked everywhere :)

jinglebellmel · 30/07/2013 20:52

Thanks for all of your replies, really kind of you.

I am a little overweight, had a bmi of 27 at booking in and have put on about 3lbs since then, don't really carry it on my stomach but perhaps this could be a factor as you say.

Only 6 days to go until 20 week scan so at least I will know very soon if I do have cause to be worried. Fingers crossed the lurching feeling I am taking to be stress is actually the baby somersaulting away!

I just realised I out 16 weeks in my post ha . Don't worry Hun some people don't feel until 22-23 weeks etc

jinglebellmel · 31/07/2013 16:34

Thanks Sarah, I'm fluctuating between thinking its probablty all fine and normal, to reading other people's posts of feeling movement and even seeing it from the ouotside and panicking! What will be will be I guess.

Hey jingle

I didn't feel anything before my 20 week scan and my plancenta wasn't in the way either. First started to feel movements at about 21 weeks and DP could feel kicks at 23 weeks. I was worried as well but at 20 weeks baby was kicking, punching and yawning on the screen! Now 35 weeks and still get worried if she's a bit quiet some days. I think feeling her kicks is one of the nicest sensations ever - even when its keeping me awake!

Oh and my pre pregnancy bmi was 19 so no issue with weight cushioning kicks.

lilstar · 31/07/2013 20:43

Hey jingle, i was between 18/19 weeks when i first felt the baby move. Its my second pregnancy and apparently it can be later for 1st pegnancies. From what i've read there is a large range for when people first feel it.

HumptyDumptyBumpty · 01/08/2013 17:24

I am 17+6 and not a hint of movement yet, my mw said not to expect it until 20weeks.
Also, she refused to listen for heartbeat when I asked (for reassurance!) and said it can be distressing if they can't find hb. Hmm It's also distressing not to have any movement and not to have ever heard the hb, but apparently that's fine...

jinglebellmel · 01/08/2013 21:31

Humpty - I now how you feel, my midwife didn't listen to the heartbeat either. The 8 weeks between scans seems like a really long time without any indication of whether your baby is okay and still there! I'm sure we'll both be fine though, will keep my fingers crossed that you get some movement soon to put your mind at ease.

Thanks to everyone else for your comments, they have helped me relax a little.

I am 18 weeks and I haven't felt anything too. Had a scan today and baby's fine. She was all snuggling fast asleep when we saw her. I have a front facing placenta so I probably won't feel anything till about 21 weeks. Spoke to a few ladies due in January 2014 and they are all about 17/18/19 weeks and none of them have felt anything yet too.

Thanks Pod, that's reassuring. I put my iPhone on my stomach last night with some lively music on and maybe felt something. Was like a tiny pull on my stomach from inside, but not sure if I imagined it as I wanted to feel it so much! Scan on Tuesday, so hopefully I will be able to report back then that all this worry was unnecessary!

posybunchof · 03/08/2013 10:43

I wasn't feeling anything at that stage with this one either - turned out I had an anterior placenta, told me at the scan. I'm sure everything is fine. If you're doing lots of 'test runs' at home, sonographer told me eating chocolate helped get the baby moving - it's a good excuse anyway! xx

Yonionekanobe · 03/08/2013 16:52

I'm 18 weeks and feeling a lot BUT this is my second pregnancy and that apparently makes a difference. I don't think I felt DD until much later...
