I'm currently on holiday in Africa, found out I was pregnant last Saturday, started bleeding Saturday, very very heavy fresh red blood, so much so flooded for two days, still bleeding now but not as heavy, so thought I had an early miscarrige on Saturday, however pregnancy tests have been getting darker each day. Today I've started feeling a stitch like pain in right hand side, tonight it's getting sorer but not constant at all, just if I move. I end up doubled over with pain? I'm 5 weeks tomorrow (if I am still pregnant) if I was at home I would go get checked out, slightly worried it could be etopic? But no shoulder pain, do these symptoms sound like it could be? Would hormone level still rise if I had miscarrige last Saturday? I've googled and if it was etopic it would usually rupture between 6-8 weeks? Would it be totally stupid waiting till I'm home on Monday before getting seen? I have 3 kids with me in a foreign country, couldn't be a worst possible time! X

You need to be seen asap. Hassle in a different country yes but necessary. Nobody here can really comment on what might be wrong if anything.

Go to a doctor as soon as possible.

I wont say what it could be because I could be wrong, I could worry you or I could be confusing symptoms with something else.

But definitely see a doc ASAP.

I'd strongly suggest seeing a health care practitioner, but the amount of blood would suggest to me not an ectopic.
I only had a tiny amount of brown, gunky blood with my ectopic, and that was apparently typical.

Hope everything is OK. Whatever you decide to to, if you get severe pain, you MUST go see someone.

See if I was home I could get someone to look after kids, they obviously don't know anything just think I have a dodgy belly, I have no idea if the hospital would allow them in with me, and I will totally ruin their holiday if they knew what was going on? And say I did need to stay in, I doubt the hospital will allow 3 kids to stay with me, and they are too young to stay in hotel, that's good to know nextphase, I wouldn't even expect to bleed this much if it was a miscarrige, I've lost 2 before and I don't remember there being this much blood, but pregnancy tests have definatly been getting darker, did you have warning ie did pain gradually get worse over a few days? Or was it one min you were okay and next you weren't? X

I understand it's difficult for you to be seen by a doctor but imagine something went terribly wrong and you ended up in hospital unconscious, what would happen with your children then? What if something happens to you in the night?

Which country are you in? Are you in a hotel? They should be able to advise you on emergency medical care and also if it's possible to take the DC. Have you made friends with any other Holiday guests?

Phone your holiday insurance company they will find you a doctor.

You need to see someone ASAP.

UK consulate should be able to help with kids if you are stuck in hospital. Agree with others, though, you do need to get seen urgently to avoid chance of worse happening to you and them.

I miscarried in another country and was told in no uncertain terms by UK-based medical staff that pain and/or heavy bleeding needed immediate care and that, regardless, I should not fly until ectopic had been ruled out. Different women will present with different kinds of bleeding and pain with ectopics, and you risk a life-and-death emergency midflight if this is not ruled out.

All best wishes.

I agree with the others, seek help, talk to the embassy or the consulate for some help - they might atleast be able to help you find childcare so you can see a doctor? I had a miscarriage several years ago, and it was really heavy (insanely heavy) bleeding that went on for two weeks, no pain however. But I think it's very different from every time it happens, and also, it could be something else. Best to be on the safe side! I wish you the best of luck, look after yourself!

OP how are you doing today?

Report

Hey, thanks for all your messages, been trying to reply all day but Internet is rubbish here, decided to wait to see how I was overnight and go see doctor this morning but pain seems to have stopped as has bleeding, usually wake up in pool of blood with tampon and pad! And there was nothing at all this morning, also did another pregnancy test and its even darker now, and was sick at least 50 million times today! So I'm now thinking I must still be pregnant, my flight home is tomorrow so will be seeing doctor, any changes overnight I will see doctor here, but leaving for airport at 5am, does anyone know if I need to wait to see my own doctor on Monday or can I refer myself to maternity unit on Sunday if pain/bleeding starts again? Xx

Call your OOH when you get back. They will advise what to do. I suspect self-referral to early pregnancy unit on a Sunday is unlikely to be possible in most areas, but the local OOH should know.

Ooh can refer, my epu does scans on Sundays

Report
nextphase · 28/07/2013 09:23

Hope your having a safe trip home.
It really will depend on your area - no early pregnancy referral on a Sunday, but you do need to go and see OOH/NHS driect/111 if anything changes.

Report
HJBeans · 28/07/2013 10:01

In my area te EPU would see you on the weekend - worth calling to see what's available.

Report
nextphase · 28/07/2013 10:18

Sorry, that should have said no EPU referal round here on a sunday.
