Hello. I am 6 weeks pregnant and Thursday evening I suddenly felt funny hotflush and as if I needed the toilet. When I wiped there was light brown discharge. Freaked out - went to lie down and drank lots of fluid as I had not drunk much during the day. Next day at work discharge darker brown and a little on pad. Came home early and went to bed as discharge less when not walking about. My doctor is closed Fridays and with bank holiday not open til Tuesday. I don't have a midwife yet. Phoned epu who said it's fairly normal and to come in Tuesday morning if still worried. Or go to a&e if it becomes red bleeding. Sorry for long post just so worried I might loose baby :-( is brown discharge really normal?

I had some brown discharge around the time of implantation (7-9dpo) but nothing since. It was very light but a little bit clumpy.
I've heard that unless it's red it's probably ok.
Good luck.

I had brown implantation bleeding at 10 DPO and then further brown discharge (similar to what you describe) at 6 weeks. I also didn't have a MW so did nothing except worry.

I mentioned it at my booking appointment and my MW said it's very common at 6-8 weeks and is attributed to further implantation.

As previous poster said, it's probably nothing to worry about unless it turns red and/or becomes painful.

Pregnancy bleeding is very common and not necessarily anything to worry about. I also had a bout of red bleeding at 9 weeks and I am 32+3 now and everything is fine Smile

Go and get looked at to.be on safe side. With my first miss had light brown blood , not heavy, but had a lot of cramping with it. But no pain or cramp's am sure everything will be fine.

I had brown/pinky discharge at 6 weeks, I freaked out and went to a&e (was abroad as well) but was all fine, doc said likely old blood being forced out by growing uterus etc and about 30% women get this around this time (not sure where he got those stats from but must be based on something). It stopped a day or so later and, touch wood, had nothing like it since and am now 24 weeks. So basically, try not to panic, odds are all is fine as not fresh blood or cramps etc, but it would be worth checking out when things are open to put your mind at rest.

I had this at six weeks with DD - there was no pain or cramping - I was checked out and all was fine.

Accompanied by severe pain and cramping I had this with a pregnancy that turned out to be ectopic, but brown turned to red within 12 hours if that.

Always worth getting checked out but it is certainly not unheard of in a healthy pregnancy Flowers

Brown discharge in early pg is normal!
With all the stretching of your uterus going on, any old implantation blood is being forced out with mucus.
But it's scary to see it when you wipe I agree!
Just take it easy and as you've been told, if you start getting pains or darker red blood then go to A&E or call your EPU

I am 7weeks with DC2, had brown discharge up to last week, now stopped. With DS I had occasional brown and red discharge up to 12 weeks
There is also a lot more blood down there and thinner cells, so you can get little tears from exercise, sex or even a big bowel movement which can come out mixed with cm looking like a lot of blood - it's all vv normal.

Hi I also had this.. brown is old blood. But I know how stressful it is. Try to get looked at first thing Tues. If it gets much worse/red maybe get yourself to A&E. Rest up as much as you can.

Thank you it's good to hear other people have had the same and then been ok. It's been going on for nearly 3 days just praying it will stop so I can relax a bit.

Hiya, I had brown mucous spotting for most of the first 12 weeks, I was worried the whole time until the 12 week scan when I finally saw the baby. I did get an early scan because of it but it was so early that you couldn't even see the baby yet so that didn't put my mind at rest, (I thought I was 6+2 but scan showed I was under 5 weeks!) Brown and pink is old blood so it's usually nothing. you should go to your gp on Tuesday and tell them how worried you are and ask for a referral to epau for a scan, you'd see a baby for sure after 6 weeks so it would help to put your mind at rest. Good luck. x

I also had period like cramps the whole time too and still get those occasionally, I'm not worried anymore the scan really did help and now at 18 weeks my belly is huge so I know it's all good. And the more people I spoke to the more common it became, loads of people have the same thing and have healthy babies. x

Hi danisb...I'm currently 10+4 and have brownish discharge but started with a few streaks of v red blood. Same happened with first preg and the 2 yr old result of that is sat on the sofa next to me. Doesn't stop me panicking at the moment though so if you need someone to stress with, I'm here!

I had this around 7-8 weeks with DC1, and then it stopped after a couple of days. Terrified the life out of me, esp. as he was the much longed for baby after fertility treatment. Anyway, he's now nearly 16 and the eldest of 3.

Fingers crossed for you, I hope it all goes well. It's a scary old time, that's for sure Flowers

I really hope it's not the case for you but I miscarried at 6 wks and it was brown blood, not red. Hardly any pain, but i did have slight cramping.

Best of luck. I conceived 8 wks after that miscarriage and had twins!

Hi, I had brown discharge at 6 weeks too, posted on here about it in fact, it continued until about 8.5 weeks and then stopped.

I'm now 13 weeks and everything is fine so please try not to think the worst but if it makes u feel better definitely get checked out, I got an early scan at epu and it definitely reassured me.

The sonographer told me that although its never classed as 'normal', brown spotting is very, very common and 6 weeks is very common for further implantation bleeding.

Its very stressful though, I know!

Hi, in my pregnancy with DD as well as the current one (14 weeks at the moment, so far so good) I've had brown discharge at 5/6 weeks. I've also had 2 missed miscarriages where I had no bleeding (or pain) whatsover. Good luck, more likely than not it's nothing to worry about.

Report
Christelle2207 · 04/05/2013 22:11

my midwife said that anything pink or brown was generally fine = red however should be checked out immediately.

Please do bear in mind that unless you're bleeding heavily and/or are in severe pain/feel unwell, there is nothing A&E can do for you. They will not be able to scan you, only refer to EPU after the weekend. They will not be able to do anything to stop the bleeding. Please don't think I'm being harsh, I've been in your situation (and worse) on several occasions, but as an A&E nurse it breaks my heart when ladies in early pregnancy come in because of brown discharge/light bleeding. They're very understandably distressed and upset, and being told there's absolutely nothing we can do to help or reassure them makes it worse. Do absolutely go to A&E if you feel you need to, I'd never discourage someone from going if they felt they needed to be seen, but I've even had ladies attend who'd been sent by a MW (who knew fine bloody well we couldn't do anything) who'd said that if she came to us we'd HAVE to scan her! With what I don't know, we don't even have the equipment.

PPs are very right when they say brown blood is old blood, very common at this stage, and very rarely means anything bad is happening. Try and take it easy this weekend, look after yourself x

I had brown blood at 6 weeks, very light, tried not to worry for a few days and then I went for a wee and then had a sudden gush of blood and sadly lost my baby. I sincerely hope that this won't happen to you. Sorry if this isn't helpful.

I very much doubt the OP, who is trying to stay positive, could possibly find that post helpful!

Hi OP, no personal experience but my friend experienced the same as you are describing & she has PCOS.
She is now 16+ weeks & they couldn't explain what the brown discharge etc was.
Hoping you are ok today & that all is well for you at your next scan Thanks
