my ds loves his ewan the dreamsheep. not a mobile as such but plays nature sounds, heartbeat etc and glows a faint light. in my opinion a lot of the mobiles play tinny tunes that keep them awake rather than sends them to sleep. you dont want too much going on for them to watch/ listen to. he also has a mamas and papas mobile that looks nice on the cot but he treats that more as a toy than a sleep aid

DS still loves his fisherprice seahorse, tummy lights up and plays lullabys for 5 mins before switching off. Had it since he was brand new and he's 2.5 now.

We just recently bought the Tranquil Turtle which projects an underwater scene on the walls and ceiling. You can either have it moving or still and have either silence, wave sounds or a gentle lullaby with crashing waves.

I was pretty skeptical about how well it would work actually but it arrived yesterday and we tried it in the dark room last night and it was perfect! Does exactly what it says on the box. Smile

You can see a video of it

I also have a turtle similar to the one above that I find great. Mine is red in colour and the lights can be blue, green or red. I rarely have to change the batteries. I got mine from amazon a couple of years ago. DC1 is 2.6 and he still enjoys pressing the buttons and choosing the colour. He can also stand on it, drop it and be generally rough with it and so far no problems.

Oh, my turtle projects star constellations, not under water scenes.

We had the fisher price rainforest mobile with music box that you can separate off when baby can stand to grab the toys on the mobile. Honestly it was the best toy we got! DD is now 3.3 and still has the music box in her room, she likes to fall asleep to the music and if she wakes in the night we can go in, settle her back down and put the box on and off she goes! The music shuts off after about 20 mins which is perfect. It has also been brilliant for taking on holiday so she has something familiar with her. Have only changed the batteries in it once and it has been used pretty much every night for 3 years now. I have been looking at mobiles for DC2 and was quite tempted by a vtech one with projector, need it to be different so DD doesn't get too stressy! We also had the Scout dog toy, both the sleepy one and the bigger talking one, and they have music which would be nice to snooze too. All have lasted really well.

I think it really depends on your baby. DS hated anything like that and so I never bought one for DD. However, we've been having problems getting her to settle in her cot so I thought I would give it a try and bought this. I only started using it yesterday but it is total witchcraft!! She loves it and the white noise setting completely zonks her out. DS dropped a (toy) rolling pin or her head earlier and she was so upset and wouldn't calm down. Popped her in the cot and she started smiling the second she saw the mobile. 5 minutes later and she's snoring happily. I wish I had bought it sooner...
