What are you missing from the extensive list of avoid eating....

Hi ladies,
Congrats to all expectant mums2 be!
I'm 19+3 with 1st baby and so new experiences every day! However I'm having a huge craving for eggs, not just any eggs, poached eggs with a dippy yolk, (wipes druell from chin) ! It's the only item on the "avoid eating" list I'm really missing! Breakfast just isn't the same with scrambled or an omelette or a, god forbid, dry fry with hard yolk... I was just wandering if I'm alone in my irrational food desires!?
On the flip side I've never been a sweet tooth or fruit eater, but seem to be craving both!? And I'm completely off red and cooked meats, I had to make a sharp exit from the meat aisle of the supermarket!

Are you having any strange cravings or missing anything in particular!?

Just interested in the myths and old wives tales really

Xx

Are you in the uk? If so, runny eggs are fine.

I second that, runny eggs fine as long as they're lion stamped, in fact I didn't really give up much when pg. Only pate and alcohol perhaps that makes me irresponsible but dd is well and happy and I think you need to look at the whys behind the list and make a decision bases on the facts. Yes you might get listeria but do you know anyone who ever has? From supermarket cheese that's well in date? Thought not!

Off, you can have smoked salmon, and salami, and chorizo, where on earth are you getting these from? The Made Up List of Stuff The Wimminz Can't Eat?

Mind you, I thoroughly enjoyed a nice quiche at a buffet at Christmas, only to find out afterwards I wasn't allowed it. Still no idea. Probably something to do with eggs. Bloody ridiculous. Building incredibly long lists of things we're not supposed to eat (but are safe in modern times) seems to be a particularly pointy stick developed to beat pregnant women with. I'm not having any of it. 33 weeks today and bump and I are perfectly healthy, quiche or no quiche.

I was advised well cooked (hard) yolks only by midwife!?!? Am I misinformed?

Mmm Brie
Pâté, which is odd because I very rarely eat it!

kateliz the only thing my mw told me to be really careful about what shellfish. Poached eggs are fine as long as the egg white is cooked (ie there's no runny egg white goo - technical term there) and the eggs are lion stamped.

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#close - undercooked eggs are still on the list and it mentions nothing about lion stamped eggs

Why the hell can't you eat quiche???

My midwife told me I could eat runny eggs if they were lion stamped because it meant they were guaranteed salmonella free.

The only thing I haven't eaten is raw blue / unpasteurised cheese and pate. I don't feel deprived.

I'm 38+3 and I was informed not to eat runny eggs however after buying a book called "pregnancy -everything a new mum needs to know" I read that as long as the eggs are lion stamped your fine to eat them runny as long as the white isn't snotty.. I was seriously craving runny eggs too!!

I miss runny eggs too ... Weekends just aren't the same! I'm getting so confused with the mixed messages about what we can and can't eat.

What's wrong with quiche?! I hadn't heard that one.

The one thing I'm really really really looking forward to is a blue fillet steak. I'm not due until October. I'll be crazed by then!

Nothing because I am eating what I feel like, sometimes it includes things off the "banned" list.

Ellypoo · 17/03/2013 10:59

My MW said that as long as the eggs were lion stamped (therefore vaccinated against salmonella), and that the white was cooked and not snotty, then runny yolks are ok.

Glad Stilton is now ok, but really miss blue steak and pate.

I'm getting confused too anythingnoteverything. I was told all I needed to avoid was soft cheese with rind, liver/pâté, certain obscure fish and raw/undercooked meat & eggs. And alcohol obviously. None of these things are central to my diet and little one will be here by Christmas when I have my annual pate and soft cheese!!! Didn't know about quiche, but then I'm sure I've had friends moan that they aren't allowed to eat practically anything!

Rare steak is fine provided all sides are seared... Told by my consultant obstetrician who basically rubbished what's on the nhs website. It's out of date.

Report
legallyblond · 17/03/2013 11:29

Oh and yes - blue cheese also fine.

Sorry for the bitty posting, but apparently people should be much more concerned by vitamin supplements than normal food.

Nothing but a nice glass of wine.

I worried so much for 1 and a half pregnancies but got to 5 months in my second and went ''ah feck it'' half of the rules are outdated or just bs completely.

Now 19 weeks with dc3 and the last one seems alright [grib]

legallyblond I would love it if that was true. Apparently it used to be the case and then the nhs updated the advice again. The advice you were given makes sense to me because the bacteria is on the outside of the cut of meat. Off to google some more...

I don't miss wine as much as I thought I would, but I bought a mini bottle of cava yesterday that's just over 2 units for a treat at some point.

The egg advise is really old and inaccurate.

If you eat fresh eggs from lion marked eggs, they have been vaccinated against salmonella and you can happily eat them.

Try questioning your midwife on this and see what she says. Sadly, many midwives just trot out 'it's for salmonella' without really understanding the salmonella risks in this country.

The big risks of salmonella are badly prepared food, undercooked chicken and dodgy buffets!

The NHS advice is full of massive holes and inconsistencies. For example, all pate is banned. Now liver should genuinely be avoided. As should pate that has been made and stored. But if you whip up a homemade (non liver) pate, the mere fact of mushing it up and shoving it into a ramekin then eating it two hours later does not make it dangerous. You are no more likely to get listeria from freshly made homemade pate than its constituent ingredients. And the advice leaves out some of the most common causes of food poisoning, including take away restaurants, buffets, bagged salad, etc.

For those who fancy some reading:

This by Zoe Williams is old, but interesting generally.

This is interesting on parma ham.

Yesterday I ate: camembert, stilton, chorizo & a few sips of wine. I'm a terrible mother! Blush

The rare steak thing is due to toxoplasmosis apparently. Something you certainly don't want, but I am not sure there is a risk from British Beef, I think there have been issues in the US?

I'm rubbish too! I always thought I would be really strict but I've had pretty much everything on the banned list.

My midwife said runny yolks are fine just make sure all the white is cooked and the yolk is hot.
