Asking for sil as she had a early scan at about 9 weeks and the sonagrapher said that she thinks it may be twins but she would like to do a internal scan to make sure.

Sil refused the internal and since then everyones saying its defo twins . Shes in bit of denial atm like when she talks aboutthe pregnacy she only mentions one baby and i get the impression that twins are the last thing she wants.

So my question is has anyone been told it might be twins early on but turned out it wasnt?

Sil has 12 week scan on friday so guess we wi find out a

There is such a thing as a "vanishing" twin, when the baby dies very early on in the pregnancy, and is absorbed back into the body. But this is usually VERY early as I recall. In any event, she is having a 12 week scan tomorrow and then she will know for sure whether she has a singleton (one baby) or twin pregnancy. If its twins, your SIL may need some support as its a different scenario to having only 1 baby. Wishing her and you all the best.

I had a scan at 5+4 got told there was either 2 sacs or 1 was a bleed went back 12 days later and nothing there other than 1. So no idea if it was 2 or not to start off with

Thank you everyone and sorry to hear about some of u losing a twin, i was basicly wondering if a songagrapher had ever made a mistake about twins.

Yeah i guess she will find out for sure 2moro and hope she gets the outcome she wishes, either way i will try to be a supportive sil as she is only 18 and single.

It could have been a failed/failing second sac that they thought they saw or could have been a haematoma next to the sac ( i.e. a small bruise). They obviously couldn't see clearly on top of the tummy which is why they wanted to do a transvaginal scan as you can get closer to the womb and see things in more detail. As she refused the scan you will never really know as both an early failed sac/ haematoma often resolve in the same way and can't be seen anymore by the time you get to 12 weeks.
