Pregnancy

is this an ectopic pregnancy?

Yesterday I started having cramps about 6pm....not so painful as periods cramps but only on my right side.
No other symptoms and otherwise well...
I went to epu today and because I am 6+2 they dod some blood tests and told me to come home. They thought that at 6+2 a heartbeat might not showed in a scan and I would stress even more...
The epu phoned tonight and told me to book a scan tomorrow and that the hcg result was 5163...
Should I be worried???
Can it be ectopic with that result??
Ps I am 41..

Hi the hcg level may well be fine, a look online said it could be 1000-56000 in week 6 so you fall within that catergory. Try not to worry too much tonight, see what the scan tells you and take it from there. Everyone with one sided pain & positive hcg should be given scan because that is the only way of finding out where the pregnancy is & it is a nonsense that they didn't do it today for you to be honest. Different hospitals have different policies.

If you get severe pain go to a&e tonight. If not good luck for tomorrow.

Ps it might not be an ectopic if may be just the corpus cysts in the ovaries. Try not to worry too much (although I know that is far easier said than done)

Hi notsoold,

The reason they have booked you in for another scan is that very high or very low HCG can be a sign of ectopic pregnancy. However its more important to look at if it is doubling than anything. The actual number is fairly meaningless- at 6 weeks a normal HCG can be anything between 1,080 - 56,500 mIU/ml!!

The good news is that tomorrow they will definitely be able to tell if the pregnancy is ectopic or not. I am pretty shocked they didn't just scan you today to rule out ectopic.

I have been exactly where you are. In the end the pain was put down to post ovulation pain as I had ovulated from my right side. There is every chance baby is right where it should be, but I know you must be very worried now.

Try to get some sleep and relax tonight, tomorrow you will know and it all sounds like it is in your favour.

ThanksThanksThanksThanksThanks

notso I am amazed they didn't scan you today. Terrible. At 6 weeks baby would have have visible and they would have been able to rule out ectopic. Most EPAU cannot "discharge" you from their unit until they see the heartbeat so it sounds like they wanted to wait a week or so then they definitely would have been able to see a heartbeat, rather than have to scan you twice. It seems very mean and doesn't really take into consideration your feelings.

I had a "high" HCG number too and now I look at it and think it was a positive sign that baby was growing and doing all the right things.

Lastly, for anyone else that is reading this and might be in the same situation.. A progesterone test is proven to be very solid at ruling an ectopic pregnancy out (more so than HCG). Basically progesterone levels above 24 effectively rule out an ectopic, so I would push to have that done if anyone is too early for the scan to see where baby is, but is worried about an ectopic.

Fingers crossed for you that everything works out well tomorrow.

Just want to say I had similar pain to you but was left sided and pain in shoulder and diarrhoea which they associate with ectopic. Mw was lovely and got me in for scan that day and did bloods too. She warned me about not seeing heartbeat and what not but thankfully they saw heart beat and im 19 weeks pg (as im writing this dc is kicking lol)
So hopefully everything is ok x

Hi everyone and thank you for your good wishes....

What a day!!!!
Just back from my scan and mixed feelings really. The good news is that the yolk sac is at the right place (and not ectopic although I am still in pain). So I was told to take paracetamol. But no fetal pole was found and they said that maybe the pregancy is around 5 weeks??? Well, that does not agree with dates at all even allowing for the egg to hang around everywhere in my body before settling down in the womb (not developing???)
I will have to return on the 7th March for another scan. The MW was lovely but pretty much said to me to prepare myself for the worst :(...
So hearbeat because not even a fetal pole!!!
I am hearbroken, as I feel to hold to hope would be unwise (after seen her face)

I went through the same, suspected ectopic, I thought I was 7-8 weeks but although the yolk sac could be seen there was no visible fetal pole or heartbeat so I was either only 4-5 weeks or pregnancy was not viable, had to go back 10 days later for another scan where ds could be seen clearly, strong, healthy heartbeat and was measuring 7+2 so although I was not as far as I originally thought baby had grown quickly in the 10 days.
I know how awful the wait is and how easy it is to fear the worst but I hope my story helps you see that the scan today does not mean it is definitely bad news, ds is now 20 months and full of mischief fun.

I know how hard the 2 week wait is, I have my re scan tomorrow after a scan 2 weeks ago showed 4 to 5 week sac, when my LMP put me at 7 weeks. Although I think I've remained realistic about what I will hear tomorrow , stories like the previous poster (sorry can't remember name, on phone..) have helped me get through. I started a similar thread 2 weeks ago about no heartbeat at 7 weeks, and so many people posted positive stories. It stopped me completely despairing. All the best x

Thank you all....
1500 you are absolutely right ...my hope is in tatters....

havingalittle honey thank you... Xxx

Icanonly thank you for sharing your story. Please do you mind telling me if your symptoms continued during the wait? Your story is a balm to me, although I must confess that I am so disheartened and have cried pretty much all evening.
Even my symptoms disappeared and that reinforces the thought that everything is going downhill... ( sorryfor the pessimism...)

goosey good luck tomorrow hun..
Fx for you. I hope tomorrow to be more optimistic.... Did you keep your symptoms???
