Raspberry leaf tablets

I'm 32 weeks along on my second pregnancy. Does any one here know when you can start taking raspberry leaf tablets and how much you should take. I seem to remember last time it was about 36 weeks onward but I was taking the tea. Decided cannot be faffed this time with the insipid tea and have opted for the tablets instead. The blurb says that each tablet contains 640 mg (rubus idaeus) (from 213 mg of 3:1 estract) No idea what that means or how strong they are.

Don't know but I am drinking some as I type Grin. Didn't start til 37 1/2 weeks (am now 39 + 3) so hasn't worked so far.
Just to add another question - can you overdose on it? I've had 3 capsules and 2 cups of tea today already and a whole fresh pineapple !!

I can tell you for having worked with herbalists that THEY say don't waste your time on tablets as it does NOT have the same effect, the tea does though....
Not sure how much to drink again herbalists hgad a different view to what is commonly written in prergnancy lit... i.e. taht yous hould take it from 6 months onewards until 3 months postnatally... I'm sure knowing this most people would not bother.
More importantly what have you been told the effect of taking tablets/drinking tea is ???? Most people don't know the correct answer to this too!

I was told the tablets were stronger than the tea. Was also told not to take them before 35 weeks.

Well who told you this ?
My info comes from 2 very experienced herbalists.... people repeat a lot of things and it does get diluted and misinterpreted!
What did you get told the purpose of it was?

Drank gallons of tea from 36 weeks both pregnancies. Ds: 41+4 (induced), dd:41+3. I'm sceptical!

Oh, and I should add, both labours pretty slow.

But WHAT DO YOU THINK THE PRUPOSE IF IT is......

Pupuce I wasn't arguing with you. Sorry if it came across like that, the girl in holland and barratt told me the tablets were stronger. And umm rlt is supposed to encourage better more efficient utrine contractions...dunno about that, but I do know RLT is fab for soothing later pg nausea (well it did mine).

Have I stumbled into some online exam by mistake? Are you waiting for someone to give the wrong answer so you can display your superior knowledge? Just put us right and be done with it!

Also people kept commenting on how smoothe both dd's complexions were (for newborns), and one woman asked if I'd taken rlt when I said I had she said 'aaah that would be it'.....

Becky - get a grip LOL.
It's to tone the uterus and not to ripen cervix. It does NOT induce labour.

Why aren't the tablets as effective as the tea. I thought it would be more concentrated unless the processes involved making the tea destroy the stuff that tones the uterus. I drank the tea but couldn't tell you if it was effective or not as it was my first experience of labour

I think it helped mine - only took it second time round (the tea) and first labour 17 hours, second 3 hours, uterus seemed to push him out all on its own! Oh and both babies 39 weeks and 7lb5oz. So I think it worked for me on toning the uterus and I'm hoping it will this time for my twins.

I agree the tea helped with labour. First labour was 16.5 hrs from waters breaking after induction and Becky's was 7.5hrs from start to finish..... 2 pushes and she was out!

Pupuce
So basically it is more effective post natal rather than before the birth?

BamboozlesLover · 11/06/2006 19:41

now i'm confused. i was told loose tea was stronger than teabags, but where do tablets come in?

Report
juuule · 11/06/2006 20:05

As I understand loose tea is more effective than tablets because the tablets only have the active ingredient? whereas the tea is the whole thing and when all the ingredients work with each other they are more effective? Also, the tea has to be quite a strong brew. I drank it from 37 weeks but still went overdue and it made no difference to my delivery. However, I have drunk it post-partum and my uterus has always been fully retracted by 7days pp. including after 9th. Whether it was the tea or bf or both I don't know.

BamboozlesLover · 11/06/2006 21:46

i have discovered you can get raspberry leaf tincture. which would be better - tincture or tea?

Report
BamboozlesLover · 17/06/2006 23:31

can anyone else vouch for what juuule says about it helping to retract the uterus after birth?

I have bought both the tea and tablets and was advised by my midwife that i should try 3 cups and 2 tablets a day. She said she has mixed feelings if they make labour shorter etc... but said anything is worth a try and that what she would recommend. She did say however not to start at this dose but build up from 1 cup a day from 30 weeks to 3 cups and 2 tablets by 35 weeks.

As already said a lot of this is open to interpretation so if in doubt check with someone who knows! :)
