Help! 27 weeks pregnant, has anyone else had these pains?

I woke up at 3am with quite sharp pains that seemed to go from my right
side, from my lower abdomen around to my back. Sharp pain on and off and my
belly was quite hard when it was hurting.

Rang the midwife and she said to take some pain-killers and wait an hour. The sharp pains carried on till around 6am. At which point I thought I'd have to go into see them and decided I needed a shower first 'just incase'.

As luck would have it they faded by the time I got out of the shower enough for me to go to sleep so I did (was shattered!)

Woke again this morning with what feels like bad period cramps and they have pretty much been on and off all day.

No show or anything but v. uncomfortable. Just wondered if its braxton hicks is it usual for it to go on this long?

P.s also been diagnosed with Uterus didelphys (double uterus) so I am a bit anxious about early labour.

Was just wondering if anyone else had something similar to this?

To be honest, I would call your midwife again and explain exactly what's been going on, especially as you're only 27 weeks. It could be stretching, or could be contractions, or any number of other things. I had on-off pains in this pregnancy at 27 weeks, went to get it checked out and it turned out they were contractions and my cervix was changing. Had injections to stop them & steroids for baby's lungs, but luckily it just about settled and I'm now 34 weeks!

Thanks :)

Called the midwife who told me to call triage.

Triage told me that because I had been sick they didnt really want to have me
in due to them having to isolate bits of the ward because of that virus going
round.

Tried to explain my morning sicknes had never really gone away and thats why Id been sick this morning....

So just have to wait and see if they intensify (gulp)

The period pains sound like it could be contractions, I would get checked out just to be safe. I am 27 weeks and getting pains but not period pains, I am also getting braxton hicks so it could be you are getting more painful braxton hicks. Does your bump tighten and go hard with the period pains?
Hope everything is OK but do think you should get checked out just to be on the safe side x

Thanks and yes my bump does get harder with the pains

If they get stronger I will definitely call them back. But as I said they don't want me in until they do because I've been sick ( I think they think I might have a virus)

Labout contractions tend to intensify, or get closer together, or both, as time passes. Braxton Hicks tend to remain the same, or be intermittent. If you had really painful ones but then less painful ones, it's likely BH.

BH also often ease or stop during/after a shower or bath! Proper contractions almost never do (although it may be easier to get through them in a bath).

BH tend to ease or stop when you change positions, e.g. sitting from standing, or standing from lying down, etc. They also tend to ease/stop if you change your level of activity - either rest after being active or the other way round.

Also:
"If you are less than 37 weeks pregnant, call your doctor or midwife if your contractions are accompanied by:
?watery discharge or bloody vaginal discharge
?lower back pain or cramping
These are signs that you may be going into premature labour.

TBH because you're in pain, I'd go and see a GP first thing tomorrow. Explain that triage have fobbed you off, hopefully the GP will be good enough to call them themselves or refer you, maybe to a different unit.

As a last resort, maybe go to A&E? At least that way they'll HAVE to see you.

Best of luck!

there's also a little table at the bottom of this article that are handy for telling the difference between BH and true contractions. There was a bigger, more detailed table somewhere on the net, can't find the damn thing!

If I was you I would go to triage and lie to them, tell them the pain has got worse (I know that sounds bad) but you need to be seen and as you said its pregnancy related sickness so probably not a virus!

Good info on BH! I'm just reassuring myself that thats probably what it is (hopefully) It did seem to fade off after the shower, but gets worse if I'm moving around.

They aren't getting worse atm, or getting better.

GP sounds like a good idea. Lol don't really want to call triage again tonight unless it's true panic! As they seem convinced I will infect their ward lol

have you tried calling your midwife again? Maybe she's got something else up her sleeve... or maybe she could call triage and have a word with them!

Also, if it's been more than 12 hours since you last called triage, the shift will have changed and the new people would be HIGHLY unlikely to have heard of you.

this also says you should be worried if your contractions/pains are 10 minutes or less apart, or if you have 5 or more of them per hour. I remember reading somewhere how long they should last to seek medical help but can't find it just now Xmas Sad

oh Sad one source says to panic if they are longer than 30 seconds, another that BH can last up to 2 minutes! Xmas Confused

I think you should get checked out anyhow. If not by triage then at least by your midwife or GP. At least for your own peace of mind!

I don't know if they do this over here, but in my home country they'd usually give you mild spasm relief medication if you're really suffering from your BH. Such over-the-counter medication wouldn't usually do a lot if you're in proper labour, but what I think they do if they have to hospitalise you is give you spasm relief, too, but a much stronger kind. There's even a medicine, can't remember the name, that can stop contractions altogether. It's used to prevent premature labour. But again I've no idea if it's used over here, the NHS don't tend to use many of the same medicines that other EU countries use. They tend to either have their own alternative under a different name, or nothing at all.

Best of luck to you! Hope you get a good night's sleep.. for the next 11 weeks or so! Xmas Smile

Thankyou TT Xmas Smile I think I'll hold out tonight and call again if it's still here tomorrow.

I'm not sure what they can do if it's BH, it's my first. Spasm relief sounds great though!

In regards to the good nights sleep...think I'll try the bath idea in a minute!

oh don't worry we all do the first time paranoid thing! In fact many of us will go on to be 2nd, 3rd and quadrillionth time paranoid Xmas Wink

I went to have a CTG when I thought the baby hadn't been moving as much as usual Xmas Blush he turned out to be perfectly ok of course. The midwife did say to me though, they prefer mums who panic and get themselves checked out to those who leave it too late!

How are you feeling, anyway? Are they still keeping you awake?

Report
LookingForwardToMarch · 23/12/2012 19:34

Yes they have woken me a couple of times but don't feel as bad now (probably because Im not panicking!!!)

And yep know that feeling, almost convinced myself of that earlier but then she started kicking again lol
