Pregnancy

40wks +2days with unusual pains???

Hi,

2nd pregnancy. 1st was emerg cs due to breech. Trying for natural this time but no joy yet! Been in on monitors twice this week due to high blood pressure and scar tenderness. Been told head still not engaged but I am feeling strange sharp pains regularly now down below a bit like lightening! How can this be if they say head still high? Has anyone experienced anything like this? Prev cs was 14 months ago if this helps.

Also, I am supposed to be waiting till Friday then going in to discuss induction which I am flatly refusing. If this baby doesn't want to come out naturally then I am certainly not forcing it! But going back to be monitored again tomorrow and seriously considering whether to insist on cs this week instead. Don't feel that anything is happening and cant see 4 days making any difference. It is becoming increasingly difficult looking after dd1 who isnt walking yet and dh can't take any time off until after I have the baby! Any advice appreciated??

poor oyu - being over due is horrid isn't it? Maybe the pains are the starting of something? Bit puzzled though - why so against induction as baby not ready but don't mind c-section?

well to be honest because of all stories I have heard about how it can cause scar ruptures and even some of my midwives tell me not a good idea after prev c section especially as my prev babe was 3 weeks early and 7lb 8 oz so expecting a big baby this time!

Ah I see!! Hope it happnes naturally for you but if not talk to the consultant about a c-section.

I was told that induction was not a good idea after a previous c section and that it would not even be suggested.

God luck and hope you get the birth you want and a happy, healthy little one following it :)

Hello,
I recently (2 weeks ago) had a vbac, although my cs (also emergency) was 5 years ago. I was 8 days overdue, so don't give up yet, it may still happen. DS was not engaged at all until I was 6 cm dilated, either. I believe this is not unusual for second or subsequant babies.

I was booked for induction if nothing had happened by 12 days. I think polieies vary by hospital. I was told the failure rate is much higher, as they give much lower doses of the drugs, and will not repeat them, due to risk of rupture.

Another CS will make caring for your dd and new baby much harder... I had this experience, and couldn't lift my non-mobile 16 month old for a long time.

Can't offer much advice, but would suggest that if pains are regular, you contact midwife, just in case you are starting off.

Good luck, whatever happens/you decide. Let us know how you get on.Smile

hi

can you say more about the pains? where are they?

i'm not a doctor or a mw - she says hurriedly - but i wonder if your baby is OP or some other sub-optimal position? if this were so then the pain might be pre-labour contractions which are unusually painful as the baby isn't in the "right" position?

this is what happened to me with my first.

what have your mws told you about the baby's position?

btw - head won't engage with an OP baby afaik but then it doesn't engage until very late with a second baby anyway.

if you are worried about the pain, i suggest you phone the labour ward and if you get no joy, just go in.

hth and good luck.

Is the pain low down kind of under the bump but to the side? I had pain like that a few days before I went into labour and I called the midwife out - I was 4cm dilated adn they thought I'd have the baby that day but ds3 didn't make an appearance for another 2 days. Not sure what teh pain was in the end but it like a sharp, shooting pain, not labour pain.

oh btw - the pre-labour pains i had weren't ordinary contractions - they were very, very sharp pains which were in some ways worse.

yes the pain is further down than my bump. It almost feels like a sharp dragging pain as if something is almost coming out of me. I did have labour pains last time as I was 4 cm before they found breech and they felt a liot different than this. It is a really sharp pain rather than a long achy pain. The reason I question it is they say baby is head down but not engaged so how can I be feeling pain so low down if nothing there yet. I am quite sore underneath like Things are stretching ready for baby but don't understand why I am feeling this when theyt tell me baby is not down in my pelvis yet??!!! Very confused.

By the way, I have not had scan to confirm position of baby even after last time so not confident with them anyway!

Is your pain really low in your crutch?

If so ds was just the same, felt like he was in my knickers-Nightmare!!!!!!

And ds was 10 days late and induced.

Hope you are ok,when do you next see midwife/consultant........?

Hope things are clearer tomorrow, maybe you are already in labour.

I was already 3cm when induced with ds.

how is the pain now? remember you can just go in to the labour ward or a&e if you get no joy on the phone to them. if you decide to hold out until tomorrow, do ask them to check the position of the baby, and if it seems possible that your pain could be caused by sub-optimal positioning, do ask them for advice on comfort measures, best positions for you to adopt etc.

good luck for tomorrow.

i'm sure you've heard all of these before but have you tried rasberry leaf tea, sex and curry?

also one that works really well is to rub clary sage oil nto your big toes, using a strong clockwise motion. convinced it worked for me!

oh, and hot baths!

good luck Smile

Hiya,

babies heart rate was slow on Wed so opted for elective section on Thurs. When he was born he weighed 10lb 1.5oz and his head was jammed against my pelvis almost certainly too big for natural delivery.

If I had waited for induction it would prob have been an emergency c section anyway!!!

He is a big gorgeous boy and we called him Joshua. Thanks to everyone for their advice!
