Pregnany with one kidney

I have one healthy kidney and today have got a BFP. Whilst very excited about this, I am little apprehensive about the pregnancy due to having one kidney and will this make a difference to my antenatal care?

Anyone else have one kidney and gone on to have a successful pregnancy? I am calling the doctor first thing in the morning to find out what I should and shouldn't be doing. (am avoiding google after a sparse glance scared me witless).

Congratulations! I suspect that you will be referred for early booking, be treated as hi risk (read that to mean wrapped in cotton wool and monitored closely), and possible liason with a renal specialist.

this is sort of second hand info, but a childhood friend of mine (who I now only really see in passing IYKWIM), had a kidney removed as a child. She has two perfect little girls, though I don't know what lengths she went to achieve them. I do know that she had a CS with her first and VBAC with her second, so that does cover quite a lot of bases! I'm sure someone with more info will be along soon!.

I've got 2 kidneys, but one is covered in scar tissue so doesn't work much, I've currently cooking my 3rd, first one was fine, second I had a couple of nasty bouts of pyelonephritis, which landed me in hospital for a few weeks. This time I've only had one uti so far (12 weeks in) which has cleared up fine with antibiotics at home. I think as long as you are under consultant care, dash to the doc at the first sign of a uti and have your egfr checked regularly you should be just fine.
You will be more prone to Uti while pregnant, and it is more likely to spread to your kidneys whilst pregnant as the whole baby thing means the one way valves on your bladder dont work quite so well.
Drink plenty, pee often and hope you have a healthy 9 months!

Hi Stuck, I only have 1 kidney and I have a 22 month old ds. I carried him well, no problems at all, blood pressure perfect - protein in my urine a few times but this could happen to anyone. I carried him until 39 weeks when I had a ELCS due to ds being breech. I had no more problems than anyone else, and none since. Good luck!
