Hi - am 30 weeks pregnant and was told today that you shouldnt eat pineapple in pregnancy. I had sweet and sour the other night which contained pineapple - should i be worried and what are the risks associated with it??

Throughout my pregnancy with DS I had a real thing about pineapple and ate loads of it. It wasn't until after I had him that I heard that pineapple is supposed to bring on labour. I'd never heard about it when pregnant with DD either.

(by the way DS was a week early but as DD was nearly 3 weeks early I think I tend to have them a bit earlier anyway -pineapple or no pineapple )

Pineapple contains an enzyme that affects proteins...in effect it helps to cut them up....this is why a fresh pineapple slice will stop a jelly from setting.

However , when you eat a pineapple this enzyme present it itself cut up by the enzyme whe have in our stomach.

So, for the life of me, I can't see what effect it would have on your pregnancy.

Fresh pineapple is used to try and self-induce labour (along with raspberry leaf tea). It's not recommended until the end of pregnancy for obvious reasons. I tried it with my 2nd and was in pre-labour for 3 weeks.

I remember buying one when I was coming up to my due date with DS. It was sitting in the kitchen and I didn't dare eat it
DS arrived on time !

Wow - I have NEVER heard of anything about pineapples and pregnancy! I went through one whole pregnancy without ever hearing anything about it at all - now I'm 11 weeks into the next one & this post is the first I've EVER heard about any "risks" associated with pineapple. That said, there's no way it could be TOO dangerous - I would echo "ignore."

Apparently you have to eat the core for it to induce labour - and then of about 7 whole pineapples (I ate tons when overdue and it did zilch!) so i can't imagine you'd have had any in your chinese! Just more scare stories
