can i eat corned beef??

Seriously, avoid getting ratarsed, don't smoke, don't take drugs, don't eat food that hasn't been cooked properly and you are good to go. There is far too much paranoia about eating and very few foods that you need to avoid completely. The NHS website is very good for advice.

I think the only issue with corned beef is there is no nutritional value in it.

Now I want a corned beef and pickle sandwich....

I know im just so paranoid with this pregnancy as I had miscarriage in Jan and I have a hemorrhage with this baby! But I think I will have my corned beef hash tonight! Xx

It may be slightly high in fat & salt but 'no nutrional value' is a bit extreme; what's protein then if not a nutrient??!!! It's not a deep-fried mars bar or something. Eat what you fancy within reason, just like you should the rest of the time, to get a healthy balanced diet, and you're fine.

Agree with Chunkychicken. I, like you had a craving for corned beef hash (of all things, a childhood thing I think) when I was pregnant with DC1 and I don't even really like or eat red meat normally. Needless to say he came out happy and healthy .

I ate it when the cravings got really bad (with petit pois and HP sauce yum yum!). I also had a previous miscarriage (so I also understand about the paranoia) so for my own peace of mind I used to put the corned beef in the oven to make sure it was piping hot (and to melt off some off the fat) before mixing it with the potatoes. Enjoy...

Do they still make corned beef?! Does it still come in those weird shaped tins with the key thing you had to twist to open that usually caused you to slice fingers open in the process?!

I reckon corn been in a tin is sterile (hasn't it been cooked in the tin?) and therefore harmless, yet disgusting.

He he pickles, I remember the weird cans as well, what's that about?! There was always just one tin of it in the cupboard at home, still to this day don't know if anyone ate it or it was the same tin no one could get into without losing a finger!

Thought it was something to do with the beef not being fully cooked...? don't quote me on it, but if you're in any doubt do some Googling and something is bound to come up which explains it better than me!

Of course it's cooked, it's been preserved for pretty much ever in a tin! Correct me if I am wrong but tinned food in general is very safe to eat. If it was raw it wouldn't have a best before on the can of approximately 2025. Perhaps this is not true of corned beef that you might buy on the deli counter, although I personally would doubt it.

The corned beef you buy on deli counters just comes from an even bigger tin (one of the many jobs involving polyester outfits was in Safeway deli counter). So it's still mingling but still perfectly safe to eat. Unless you eat it whilst scuba diving. That would be frowned upon during pregnancy.

With nothing better to do with my time today, I emailed Princes (manufacturer of tinned corned beef) who replied with:

"A mixture of pre-cooked and raw beef is put in the can and then cooked
within the sealed can in order to render the contents sterile. We do
appreciate that some consumers who are not aware that all canned foods
are cooked (in the sealed can), may be led to believe that the can
contains a proportion of raw beef, which is not the case. Nevertheless,
I am sorry for any confusion this may have caused."

Hope this clears it up! They marked their reply with URGENT, as if I were a pregnant woman staring at a tin of corned beef, awaiting for their reply before deciding what to eat for my lunch
