Omega 3 Deficiency During Pregnancy
Having an Omega 3 deficiency while you are pregnant can prove very harmful to you and your baby. Your baby takes Omega 3 from the foods that you eat. The nutrients cross the placenta, helping your baby to grow and develop. However, if your baby does not get enough Omega-3 from the food you eat, he will begin to take it from your own stores. Researchers believe that these stores may be located in the brain, which can result in a loss of up to 3% of your brain cells. Omega 3 deficiency during pregnancy is linked with:

?increased rates of postpartum depression
?increased chances of having a low birth weight baby
?increased chances of preterm labor or cesarean birth

I was taking Pregnacare conception before I conceived and I have now switched to Pregnacare plus with the Omega 3 oils. However, my brain has already started to turn to mush!!!!

It's quite a bit of money for a month's supply - I think I paid about £13.50 from Tesco. Not sure whether Tesco or Boots had them on offer for 3 for 2. Not only does it have Omega 3 but it also has recommended daily supply of folic acid and the vitamin D we're now told to take. It has plenty B vitamins as well as iron. I'm convinced the B6 is lessening my nausea and the iron is helping with the tiredness. Apparently your body has up to 50% extra blood pumping around your body so iron is probably needed in a lot of quantity.

Despite it's price, I am determined to continue taking it until i finish breastfeeding.

I'm glad the Original version doesn't have the omega 3 in it! I'm vegetarian and could only take the Original version as it is suitable for vegetarians whereas the omega 3 in the Plus version is not vegetarian. I took separate vegetarian omega suppliments alongside Pregnacare original to be sure we didn't miss out on anything essential :)

you can buy Vitabiotics direct from the website and get loyalty points for a discount on the next purchase, and they do offers regularly.

If you go through Quidco, you get 15% cashback & 10% off all products at the moment. So you might do better getting 3 months supply up front for instance

well hang on Larry Logic

they broadly contain vitamins/minerals we consume every day
the risk is that you overconsume a particular vitamin
so only the bit you overconsume is 'crap' surely, the rest is fine? yes?

so if instead of eating 5 a day fruit& veg, I transgress and eat 6, then that extra apple is 'crap'?

got you

My GP told me this week that Pregnacare is just a load of overpriced, over-marketed nonsense and a good diet, folic acid tablets (v v cheap) and if needed an iron supplement is more than enough.

I have a packet I may as well use up but won't buy any more. They are so bloody huge as well!

I think a normal multi-vitamin is just as good if your diet is lacking key vitamins/minerals.

I don;t think normal multi-vitamin supplements are safe in pregnancy are they? They usually contain vitamin a.

In the case of vegetarians, the chances that you are getting enough omega 3 (or Iron actually) are very low, so a supplement seems sensible to me!

Phew lots of comments here personally I think the extra vits important if the rights ones like you said mainlymagic especially if your veggieand dont eat meat or even fish and also alot of woman dont get enough folic acid from food cause its gets lost in cooking. What i read about omega 3s think thats important. The pregnacare plus been developed by a special team of medical experts.

I can't touch Pregnacare or anything similar.... the thought makes me feel ill! I don't know why but they make my ms (ha, joke, all day sickness) 10 times worse...... never, ever again.

I've gone down the alternative route this time and am taking a form of B6 and folic acid. Still feel sick all day, but not actually ill as I was with dd.

RobynLou · 20/05/2011 09:08

I had folic acid and spatone (iron) during both my pregnancies, have had 2 big healthy babies to show for it.
If you're worried about omega 3 then just eat a sardine sandwich for lunch!
I do think pregnacare is a rip off and unless you have a totally awful diet then it's unnecessary, but if they make you feel as though you're doing the best you can for your baby then fair enough.
I think vitamin tablets in general are pointless though - unless you have a diagnosed deficiency or an extremely limited diet.

The pregnacare plus been developed by a special team of medical experts.

Nearly all manufactured products have been developed and marketed by companies who perceive them as a way to generate profit. If the company has used a special team of medical experts its because either its a legal requirement or it gives more grist to the marketing mill.
(There are a few companies that have a much more philanthropic view - but then they tend to be a bit more bare bones on the non-essentials and don't have fancy gold embossed packaging...)

I take pregnacare - I don't think my diet is atrocious, but it could be better at time and I'm too lazy to try and work out where the biggest gaps might be so I can target them specifically rather than using a shotgun approach. But I'd rather eat some extra salmon / sardines / mackerel / linseed than shell out for pregnacare plus.

We all have to do the best we can - and for some that may mean taking Pregnacare Plus. For me personally Pregnacare Plus is more about clever marketing aimed to make all pregnant women feel that they should be giving Vitabiotics more money.

linseed is fab btw - omega 3 and stops you getting constipated (not fun when v pg/just given birth) I used to sprinkle it on my muesli each morning.
