Bleeding in 1st Trimester

Hi,

Am very worried and wondering if any other MNs have been experiencing anything similar?

I am 7 weeks pg and yesterday noticed pink discharge on the toilet paper. During the day this turned brown, then bright red and now dark red. It spots on a panty liner but is mainly visible on the toilet paper. I've also had back ache and period like pains (on and off).

There was no blood when I woke this morning but it started again during the day so I have an appt at the EPU on Monday morning for a scan. It's going to be a long weekend :(

I'm getting myself worked up into a right old state and petrified i'm going to lose the baby :(((

I bled quite badly every few weeks on my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies. It's horrible every time it happens but everything was ok. Good luck for Monday.

Thanks AtAmber, it's really difficult to be calm. I'm trying to take it easy but it's hard with a toddler! Did you go for scans after each bleed? Did they say what had caused it?

It is going to be a horrible wait, I've been there I know.
I bled frequently throughout my first trimester starting at 7 weeks and finishing at 14 weeks, not spotting but major bleeding (very much like period), but I had no pain whatsoever. I had 6 ultrasound scans with the EPU (within those first 14 weeks) and thankfully for me each time my baby was fine (he's now 1 year old). It turned out in my case to be a bleed from the cervix.

Try not to worry too much (I know easier said than done), I feared every visit to the toilet throughout my pregnancy. I wish you lots of luck for Monday.

Thanks so much for your reassuring words! It's so hard though not to fear the worst. I didn't have any of this with my first pregnancy. My boobs aren't swollen or tender really either (although they haven't been since I got a BFP) but OH reminded me they took a while to get bigger last time. Have had no morning sickness either (but didn't have any last time).

Keeping my fingers crossed all is ok with our wee Xmas pud! xx

PS - Guacamole, I think the fact i've had accompanying backache and intermittent period pains alongside the bleeding makes me more sure pud has gone

I don't know Pie and you won't either until Monday, so just try an concentrate on getting through the weekend. And try not to compare your pregnancies. (Very un-Mumsnet hugs to you)

I spotted through my first trimester a few times and I remember the first time that I cried myself to sleep. I am now 21 weeks pregnant so some stories of bleeding have happy endings.

Is the bleeding getting heavier? I read a bleed at 7/8 weeks is extremely common (breakthrough bleed?) and had one myself (initially 50p sized blood stain on my knickers which I freaked out about, and pinky on a tissue for about 5 days after that), in our area they will not give scans unless you bleed alot so Dr just tested my hcg which was fine. Lots of women on the due dec antenatal thread have had minor bleeds, some have been given scans, and haven't read of any bad news yet. My mother (who has experience of many mcs) said generally the blood loss would be substantial.

Thanks - I will go and check out the Dec ante-natal thread. I've read lots of articles that say bleeding in 1st trimester is common (but not normal) and i'm clinging onto all being okay. I'm also 40 next year and have read that age can be a factor in miscarriages? I kept cuddling DS this morning and thinking how lucky I am to have him. My OH is very much 'why worry until you know for sure' whereas i'm the opposite!

It's very difficult to 'take it easy' and 'not lift anything heavy' when there is a wee one causing chaos in the house!

Woke up this morning and there was no blood on the pad but quite a bit when I wiped. 48 hours to go! I'll probably be there ridiculously early on the Monday!!

Again, thanks for the kind words - they are giving me some hope over the weekend, as with everything associated with babies I have to wait!

I bled at 7 and 9 weeks, now seems ok at 13. Good luck with everything, I appreciate how stressful it is

That sounds similar to what I had, still a fair amount of blood on the tissue but not enough to go onto the knickers, and not in any way like the amount during a period. I know age can be a factor but being 39 doesn't mean its automatically the end of babies (my mother had me at 39). I am going to keep thinking very positive for you and sending you lovely positive vibes by wireless internet connection - zzzzzzzzzzt.

Thanks so much - the bleeding is now dark brown, very strange! OH has taken DS swimming so i'm home alone and need to stop googling about miscarriages - it doesn't do my mental state any good. Washing up will be better for me!

thanks beemybaby

Hey,

I am 6 weeks and have also had bleeding. I went to doctors last wednesday - I wasn't overly worried as was a tiny amount of blood and the internet had assured me it was breakthrough bleeding... the doctor then said thas wasn't usual and packed me off the the Early Pregnancy Unit... 4 hour wait... scan... healthy 5week 5 day old embryo with a great heartbeat.

Have continued to bleed - not a lot, not at night- hardly anything on pad during the day, only when I wipe... yes, its worrying me... but I'm keeping everything crossed for the healthy embryo to turn into a healthy baby...

I know that they say stress isn't good for the baby - so am desperately trying to relax... My mum recommended iron supplements to help replace lost red blood cells...

Good luck.
:D

I had constant bleeding everyday until 7 weeks, more at something like 11 weeks and 14 weeks. The last 2 bleeds were like periods. I didn't go to the MW about it because I'd had a MC before and with so much bleeding I was very pessimistic about it all and didn't want to hear bad news. But DD is now 7 1/2 months and has no health problems at all!

I hope everything goes well. Good luck. Smile

dark brown is old blood... could be you've upset your cervix if you've been sexually active or done too much activity or maybe leftover blood from implantation

Report
PieMistress · 07/05/2011 11:12

I think I'd be less worried if it had only been brown blood but it started off pink, then bright red, then dark red and now brown, over the past 3 days (with none at night). I've still got intermittent back and period type pains though.

We've not done IT since the BFP (!) but maybe I've been overdoing it recently, especially on holiday lifting some heavy stuff, including DS! Who knows!!!

Before I got my BPF with this pregnancy I had 3 very odd menstrual cycles though with mid-cycle bleeding so not sure if perhaps this is hormone related and i've got a progesterone deficiency. Trying not to read into it all (but unsuccessfully!!)

Let me know how your bleeding pans out MummytobeLizz, good news that your scan and heartbeat were healthy!

My MW sent me a text last night telling me to take it easy so I shall heed those words this weekend!

Another tmi moment... not only had the bleeding continued today - along with a subtle stitchy feeling on my right side... had THE worst upset stomach today...

I haven't eaten anything weird and the internet reckons this is another pregnancy sign... anyone else had this??

Am so exhausted, possibly just from the stress of it all! I wish I could have another scan... maybe one every day, just to put my mind at rest...

paranoia... joy.

DH and I have done IT after BFT but before bleeding, on the first day I thought that it may have caused the bleed -after 48hrs... I reckon it has to be left over implantation stuff or breakthrough bleeding. My Mum said she had periods (cramps. heavy blood) the whole way through the preg with both me and my younger brother...

This is horrid for you i am so sorry, I bled horrendously at 8 weeks, 5 days of bleeding with large blood clots, spoke to the drop in centre in the hospital, my community midwife and the hospital midwife (the last two because it took a while for them to return my calls so i ended up speaking to both). i was assured that i had had a miscarriage and was offered a scan if i needed 'closure', to be honest i just needed to get on with my life so i declined as walking into a room full of beautiful preg women only to be told 'yep, its an empty space' is not what i needed. Have just got more and more chubby so booked in for a private scan yesterday expecting there to be lots of left overs from the miscarriage only to find a baby with a heart beat. Im not saying that i was wrong to turn down the offer of a scan as i couldnt have coped with that at the time but i have just gone through 5 weeks (luckily not boozing) thinking that i was just a bit chubby only to find out that i was still carrying. Its hard not to worry i know, but i cant find any explaination as to why i would have such heavy bleeding plus blood clots and still be pregnant, there is always a chance. I really, really hope that it is ok for you, i am sure that it will be, apparently brown blood is a really good sign (have spent a bit too long on the internet recently) so fingers crossed. Impossible i know, but try not to worry yourself too much about it and dont feel put off if you really feel that you need a scan. Please let us know if it is good news when you find out if you feel up to it x

Hi i have the same problem as you Pie, I have been bleeding since monday, It started off brown and very small amounts and then it slowly turned to pink and now red with clots :(
On friday i felt i needed to check myself out at the walk in centre and they told me to go straight to the hospital where they checked my wee sample and blood preassure and asked me some questions about y life style then booked me in for monday so i have been stressing about losing this pregnancy all weekend.

I have an appointment tomorrow at 10 for a scan and some tests at the EPU. I really hope i havent lost my pregnancy im around 6 weeks gone. I do feel i have though as i am bleeding with some clots but no blood at night and no pain at all. I go from feeling ok to a crying mess :(
I really hope tomorrow goes well for you!

HTBA - Our symptoms sound very similar except for I am also having phases of back pain and period type cramps. My appt at the EPU is 9.30am tomorrow! Hopefully we will both receive good news!

I woke up this morning with no blood but after i'd been up for an hour it started again when I wiped. It keps changing colour and texture though. Today it was a browny red colour and very mucusy. Just like egg white mucus but a scary colour!

Just over 24hrs then at least I will know one way or the other. I'm trying not to be too optimistic after reading lots of positive stories about bleeding in early pregnancy but seeing as i've also got no symptoms (sickness/tender boobs etc) i'm not very hopeful. I didn't have symptoms in my first pregnancy though so not sure what to think.

I woke to some blood on my pad (not a huge amount but some which was a brown ish colour) and when i wiped after my morning wee there was dark red blood on my tissue so im not very hopeful at all :(

We will both know tomorrow very early in the morning so im so glad we dont have long to wait now.

I have tender boobs, No morning sickness but i didnt have any with my last two. I should just be happy to have two healthy children but i dont think i will cope well with this loss i just feel so down, i have gone from finding out im pregnant monday to nearly/losing the pregnancy already :(

Fingers crossed for us tomorrow i hope we do have the news we long to hear.

Hi all...

despite having a scan on wednesday- I think I am mc. There was barely any blood on tues/wed but is definitely getting heavier. Have been using one pad a day up until today - already had to change the pad and its only lunchtime. Am not in pain but I haven't 'felt' pregnant for about 5 days aside from tiredness and extreme hormones...

I am not due another scan until 12/14 weeks and my wedding and honeymoon are both on the horizon (dh and I are tying the knot in 4 weeks...) I don't know whether to try to arrange an earlier scan pre-wedding or to hope all is ok until we return from honeymoon...

Really don't want to find out I mc just before the wedding. Am praying Emmy is ok - I hate this helpless feeling.

Feeling low today. :(
