A bit of advice needed

Hello

I am 20 + 2 weeks and recently I tested positive for ketones in my water.

I have a water infection (which was found at the time). My doctors sent me for a fasting blood test to test for diabeties, which came back negative (which is good news).

I dont know why I have ketones in my water and I am worried, plus I cant get hold of my midwife and the doctors system is down so I cant speak to one until tomorrow morning.

I dont understand why I have them, as I stopped being sick weeks ago, and I am getting plenty of carbs in my diet.

Has anyone else had this before?

BTW I had my scan yesterday and baby is fine, although she didnt want to move much lol.

AFAIK it means you are not eating and drinking enough, especially the drinking bit. Drink plenty of water- use a straw- you get more in that way. Try smoothies, dried fruit, rice cakes with cheese and fruits as snacks to get more good calories in you in between meals.

Glad to hear baby is OK, ketones are quite common, you just need to eat/drink a bit more.

I had this in my urine when I was sent to hospital with pains (not related obviously), the nurse said it was probably due to the fact that I hadn't eaten or had anything to drink in a long while.

If I drink anymore water I think I might pop like a water bomb lol. I think it might be my diet;

Here is what I normally eat;

Breakfast - 2 weetabix with loads of milk, 1 cup of tea and a glass of innocent smoothie

Lunch - Cheese sandwich of some sort, bags of crisps and fruit

Tea - Something like chicken, potatoes and veg.

Come to think about it I havent felt like much pasta recently, and I dont seem to be snacking in between meals much as I feel really full. I might start getting some bits I can nibble in the day to keep my levels up.

Thanks for the advice

Little and often, you need about 400 extra calories a day when you are pregnant some people need more. That is about a sandwich and a piece of fruit in addition to what you usually eat.

Try building in a mid morning snack, afternoon one and then supper. Nuts are good to eat too.

You get ketones when you are not drinking enough and start to burn body fat. Carbs usually sort it out.

I meant eating enough. It also means you've used all the glycogen (fuel reserves) in your blood or muscles (I forget where it is stored)

Did they tell you what level of ketones? Should not be a problem if it is only a bit and only once.

No I dont know the level of ketones, hopefully the doc will let me know in the morning.

I didnt realise I needed more calories, everything Ive read tells me to eat sensibly and not to increase my intake, but it makes sense.

Im going to try eating more

Thanks for all of the advice everyone.
