Pregnant with a cough - are any cough mixtures safe to take?

I wouldn't mind being able to take something at night - hot herb tea and honey helps in the day but can't bear to get up and make it at 3am.

Had a terrible night coughing last night.

only the sort of ones that aren't really any better than honey and lemon - anything that would actually work is too strong for PG... (or so I was told by the consultant obs/gyn anyway)

Seem to remember taking one called Covonia, which worked pretty well. Better check with a pharmacist that they still think it's OK for pregnancy (must've been 5 years ago that I had it)

I had a cough when pg and Boots said I could only take one of their own brand linctuses - a honey and lemon type of thing, I think it was.

Think Benylin is OK too. I'm bfing, so just take the kids one, which I'm giving to DS at the same time

Doc gave me some linctus which was ok.

Safest bet is to ask a phramacist - they're really good with things like that.

Enid - I've got a similar persistent cough. Doc prescribed me codeine linctus safe in pregnancy and I only take it at bedtime not during the day. Plus it makes me drowsy which is no bad thing in my opinion. The cough has got infected this week so I've been prescribed penecylin this week too which is safe too.

Hope that helps

Pharmacist will say nothing other than the glycerin based stuff that doesn't actually make it better just supposedly helps with the symptoms. Lockets are ok but they say to avoid anything with either antiseptic or anaesthetic. Basically if it is really bad you'll have to get the doc to give you something. I suffered mine out and it was better after about a week and gone after two.
