Pregnancy

I had such good intentions regarding weight gain

but now I've started to feel sick every minute of the day and the only thing that seems to make me feel better is to eat all the time, and all the wrong things.
Oh well, after last pregnancy I lost 63 pounds, will just have to throw some money at Weight Watchers again...

I had great intentions when pg with DS2, until like you I started to feel sick, also had the funny taste in my mouth. The only things I wanted to eat were salt and vinegar crisps, chocolate and take-away curries, washed down by gallons of diet coke. However found once the sickness and odd taste wore off a bit it got easier to eat healthy and normally.

I can't really offer much advice, as I put on over 4 stone whilst pg with DS (didn't weigh myself until 2 weeks after the birth either, so goodness only knows what it was before I gave birth!).

However, in the early weeks, whilst feeling v.sick, I did manage not to gain any weight. I followed the Slimming World plan - recommended by Royal College of Midwives as safe for pg women. I ate loads of their free foods - couscous, mashed potato, pasta..... they all seemed to stop the sickness, and being carbs kept my blood sugar nice and steady.

The weight gain was all in the last three months of the pg - had put on only half a stone up to then - as I got high bp then pre-eclampsia so was confined to my sofa to eat

So what I'm trying to say is, if you eat the right things, it will be fine If you want any more info on the SW plan, let me know. I've probably got the book somewhere (used to be a consultant). Incidentally, 9 months after birth, weight was 1 stone below pre-pg weight, so if you've got to eat, at least you know it will come off again!

Another Slimming World fan here. I'm 24 weeks pregnant and have been following the plan throughout, and am currently about a stone lighter than when I conceived.

I have developed a sweet tooth, but mostly manage to deal with this within my allowance, and just cheat occasionally .

Highly recommend it if you are concerned about weight gain.

What was the advice Enid? With my first pg I was so careful and ashamed to admit it but was hungry most of the time, put on 28 pounds pre teh birth and it must have all been baby and related parerphernalia as it was all gone within a fortnight. DS was 7.7 pounds and had very thin legs dh said i had starved him but tbh already overweight and just felt could nto cope with extra to loose. This time I am being more relaxed trying to be healthy but soo hungry and it usually hits me at midday when i have been having two lunches .

Tumblemum - it is based on a 'free food' system, so you have certain foods that you can eat as much as you like of. In the most basic format, there are green days and red days. On green ones you can eat freely from carbohydrate based foods - rice, pasta, potatoes. On red days you eat protein based foods - meat and fish. On either day you can eat unlimited quantities of most fruit, vegetables, low fat yoghurt and eggs. You have a daily allowance of calcium based foods (milk, cream etc)which is increased due to pg. In addition you have an allowance for sins - unhealthy things! It works out to a mars bar a day!

There is a lot more to it, that I can't go into in enough depth here. The Slimming World magazine is a good starting point, or I might have a spare book lying around. Of course, you can also join a group, which offers great support, but I found it frustrating when everyone else was losing weight, even though I didn't need to but was following it not to gain too much!

Laura - the calcium allowance isn't increased due to pregnancy, but is increased if/when breastfeeding afterwards.

Tumblemum - it is best to become a member to understand the plan fully, but I have some brief notes that I wrote as a guide for my parents that I can send you if you want - just CAT me your e-mail addresss.

You might also want to have a look at the SW food diaries thread on here, which will give you an idea of the sort of stuff that can be eaten in a day.

Bewitched - you're quite right! Going mad I bf ds, so that is what I'm thinking about. I did allow myself extra milk though (because I like it, and decided it was good for the baby......!!)

Mmmmmm - nesquick has been one of my cravings, so am just glad that you get 2 A sections now anyway!! Will look forward to the extra when I am bf! Funnily enough my consultant thought that you could have extra whilst pg too, until I pointed out that the booklet she gave me said differently! Makes me wonder if it's one of the things that has changed over the years.
