Growth Scan booked but unsure why??!

Hi all!

I'm sure this subject has been raised before...but hopefully someone can help?

I've got an appointment for growth scans & consultant reviews at 30 & 33wks - and as daft as it sounds I don't know why the scans?! When I rang today the Antenatal lady was very unhelpful & told me nothing!

I'm expecting DC4 & never had growth scans with 3 dds before. I'm 26 weeks now & relevant info is as follows incase anyone can shed any light?

DDs 1& 2 natural births...8 & 9 lbs DD3 CS as breech 9lbs. On Clexane injections daily for Pulmonary Embolism 3 days after DD3 was born & adamant I want a VBAC! BP ok. Placenta ok. BMI 30. Nothing else!

Does anyone have a clue from this info as to whether the reason for growth scan is in there? Last Cons appt was fine & measured =dates on measurments so a mystery all round!

Thankyou!! XxxxX

Did you have NT bloodwork done and have a low PAPP-A? That's a common reason although I'd have thought they'd have told you if that was the case. Growth issues usually start around 28-30 weeks or so if all has been looking good until now.

Any hint of measuring ahead (fundal height) or gestational diabetes at all?

Perhaps it's just something your consultant does as a matter of policy or something!

I had to have extra scans with DD because I switched to a low-risk MW-led unit late on and large heads run in DH's family so they wanted to make sure no issues there. Could it be anything like that? Are you going to a low-risk unit?

I'm having extra growth scans as have anti-thyroid hormones? Could it be something like that?

Sorry that should read anti-thryoid antibodies.

YOu can just ring up and ask.
I think it might be because all your babies have been on the big side of normal and that's what they want to check. If you're going for a 10lber this time they may like to know that! You don't have to have the scan though. If it has no worth to you then cancel it.

I had monthly growth scans in 1st preg as I had low BMI and so they were worried baby would be too small.

In this preg, I am high risk for other reasons. But, amniotic fluid level dropped in 1st preg and baby's growth slowed in last month.

Hi I'm going for a VBAC this time and I'm having lots of extra consultant appointment and extra scans. So maybe that's why.
Annoying when they don't explain isn't it.

How old are you? I had them too when preg at 39 and 40, without being told why I was having them or even that it wasn't the norm. Otherwise normal pregnancies. Since I hadn't had any other pregnancies I didnt know it was unusual.

Hello all and thankyou so much for your replies!

Fundal height on my notes is marked as = dates at 24 weeks but the midwife did make a comment about any measurment 2cms either way is acceptable so wonder if I may have been a little bigger/smaller? And no mention of GD.

The Maternity Unit is attached to the main hospital and as far as I'm aware its not a low risk unit but the booklet specifies that they don't do Epidurals there?!! Shock I'm 31 but not in the best of health with previous vascular issues and the PE but unsure whether the Clexane would mean extra scans? As I said I did telephone the unit & the lady I spoke to was useless so I'll have to wait until my actual scan to find out the reason I suspect!!

As I'm going for a VBAC I wonder if they may have concerns over a potentially big baby as Northernlurker mentioned? God knows!!

Scouseem you're spot on...its VERY annoying as we end up questioning EVERYTHING when a simple explanation could avoid a lot of worry!

Once again, thank you all for your help! X

Hi the clexane is the reason. Presumably you have blood clotting problems hence the daily clexane? Well will blood clotting problems you are at risk of your placenta clotting too soon (before the end of pregnancy) and the baby won't get enough food. At the scan they will measure blood flow as well as size of the baby. I was induced at 37 weeks for this reason as the blood flow had decreased! Baby was a bit little but not too much. Could have been worse at 42 weeks I guess! Had a scan every 2 weeks from around 33 x

I have growth scans booked because of higher than average BMI.......

Hi clouiseg, I have a growth scan booked for 34 weeks and consultant visit for two reasons:

(1)I have psoriasis and although early on it appeared to be clearing up, at around 18 weeks it started taking a turn for the worse and am now back on steriod creams, which I understand from the consultant if not used as adviced by my GP (twice a day for 4 or 5 days then 2 or 3 days off) I could have a low birth weight baby.

(2) I have a BMI of more than 30 (My BMI = 36).

I had to have one but that was cos of high bp before prgenancy and am on meds..

clouiseg · 07/02/2011 00:23

AmandaBusby that does seem the likliest reason, although the bmi could potentially be a factor from what I have read!

Had the lung clot 22 months ago hence the clexane so I guess thats a risk they're watching for. Still think they could do with telling us more! Confused

Hey ho....!
