Cramping in early pregnancy

Is it normal to feel period type pains in early pregnancy? When I miscarried I didn't really cramp (it was also v early) so I don't know whether this is a bad sign or not. I hope not :{

Hi Pippaandpolly. How far pg are you? I'm on my 3rd pregnancy. I didn't have any cramping with my 1st (DS now 2) but I did with my 2nd which sadly ended in mc in Dec. I've managed to become pg really quickly and I'm now about 5 weeks and I've had cramping since conception. I can only go by own experience and I have also been extremely worried about this. However, many other people on here have all confirmed that cramping can be a normal symptom of early pregnancy due to implantation of the baby and placenta.
I also checked this out on several other websites and apparently it's very common, especially if it's not your first pregnancy as your muscles have become weakened.
Fingers crossed we'll both be ok this time, when is your first scan?

Thanks mummytomax - definitely fingers crossed for both of us. I'm only 5 weeks too so scans etc are very far away. I'm somewhat cheered by the fact that my boobs feel like bowling balls and I'm getting a bit nauseous as the days progress - hopefully the cramping's just normal and not anything more serious. I hope everything works out ok for us both! :)

I had terrible cramping pains around the same time. I phoned NHS 24 and the nurse seemed to think it was just a UTI and to get checked out by a doctor. Called doctor out and it turned out to be a UTI afterall. Also, my muscles were getting stretched and pulled, really uncomfortable. I still get the odd crampy pain now, but I've put that down to everything moving about and being squished. I'm now 24 weeks. I'm sure it'll be okay, but I know it's hard not to worry!

I had bad period painy cramps in early pregnancy with all three of mine. Don't worry. It is just everything stretching and preparing. Be warned that you might be in for bad afterpains after the birth as everything compresses down again. - no-one told me about these!
Take your own paracetamol into the hospital with you when the time comes as the nurses are damn stingey with them!
Enjoy your pregnancy.
