Horrible Sickness, losing the will to live

Hello
I am 8 weeks pregnant with 4th DC and am feeling awful, violently sick and constant nausea. I am concerned as I can't even keep folic acid down. Have tried cyclazine, buccine (sp?) ginger, the lot. I had twins in my first pregnancy and though it was bad it was not this bad. Please give me hope and let m eknow if anyone has any tips; midwife is quite symapthetic but has nothing else to try...Thanks

Awful isn't it?

Really bland water biscuits would then help me keep fizzy drinks down. But only sip even if you're thirsty - drinking makes me sicker than eating, not sure if you're the same.

Nothing else worked.

PS by the time I got to 11 weeks constantly eating crap (doughnuts, toast/jam, cheese and onion pasties from pasty shop etc)would keep it at bay long enough to work.

Have put on 5 pounds due to this mind!

Hi Hollypocks, so sorry you are feeling like this, I don't think you can fully appreciate what it is like unless you have been there, and I know it is horrific. I am 16 weeks with DC2, had hyperemisis for the full term with DD1. When I reached 6 weeks in this pregnancy the symptoms returned and I was desperate, as CQ said, when I could eat all I could eat was what I call hangover foods, chips, pasties all the wrong things, drinking made me sick, I was so drained and down. I started acupuncture at 6 weeks and went twice a week until 12 weeks then reduced it to once a week. I still have morning sickness and nausea if I don't eat regularly (every 2 hours!) but I would say I am 100% better than I was, feel like I can lead a (nearly) normal life now and am more myself emotionally. I would definitley recommend acupuncture, don't expect a quick fix, but a steady improvement. Hope you get some relief soon x

Hey, firstly congratulations!! I can totally sympathise, I had horrible all day sickness from before AF was even due! I managed to lose 3kg in two weeks at one point.

My main tip is to eat little bits of what you can, to hell with healthy diet, that will resume when you can manage. Try and convince your OH to cook you a healthy meal each night and sit at the table while he eats- pick at what you can.

I literally could not keep my folic acid down or any other vitamins (still the case!) but baby developed just fine.

I found lemon flavoured dilluting juice the easiest drink to keep down and digestive biscuits.

It will pass, believe me x

Have you asked your gp if there are any other drugs you can try? FWIW I had Avomine which made me sleep so I took it in the evening and got my dinner in me before I fell asleep, I didn't eat much in the day as the tablets knocked me out but I could pick a bit of breakfast before they wore off. It did mean I couldn't drive though.

Huge sympathy - it's miserable, isn't it? If there is any food at all that you can think of - however fatty / sugary - without heaving then eat it. I did find that small amounts of anything helped, as did small continuous amounts of water and lots of sleep.

Thanks so much four sympathy and constructive advice. I am going to go back to the drs and ask about avomine, if I could sleep better I would be happier as means less hours in the day for sickness. This is def the last time I am ever doing this....

Hey hollypocks I can totally sympathise - I'm at 7 weeks and have all day nausea as well - yesterday I had to bring my 1 year old into bed with me and just let her watch television all day while I struggled not to throw up!! (guilty mama emoticon) The one thing that helps me for about 20 minutes are Marks and Spencers Extremely Chocolatey Dark Chocolatey Ginger Biscuits....just barely getting me through the day...bring on the 12 weeks!!

Massive sympathies - is truely miserable.
I was very sick and was eventually prescribed some travel sickness pills which helped me sleep and that took the edge off a little bit, can't remember the name.. My first pg was miserable throughout, but my second, when I initially felt much worse and literally couldn't eat a thing, did get much better and after the first trimester I wasn't very sick at all - so it may be that in a few weeks you feel better.

I lived on digestive biscuits and hoola hoops for a few weeks - my GP was happy that this was an adequate diet and ds is just fine

Hi, I had hyperemesis and ended up in hospital with dehydration when preg with DS. Only thing that agreed with me were Stemetil suppositories (I know, the idea is awful, but really, really helped). I couldn't take any medicine orally as nausea was so bad. Definately worth thinking about.

Hollypocks, I had severe hyperemesis in both pregnancies. It's mental and physical torture. I booked a termination at 12 weeks as I was so ill my hair was falling out, my skin peeling off and a hadn't eaten or drank liquid for 7 weeks (in hospital on iv fluids). Eventually they prescribed ondansetron (zofran) which is used more frequently in America but due to the cost of the drug is rarely used here. It was the only anti sickness drug that worked and literally saved my life (and my dds). When you're so violently sick all day everyday you need more than Ginger biscuits and if other anti sickness drugs haven't worked I recommend you ask your gp about ondansetron. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy, there's a website called //www.hyperemesis.org that is useful. Also don't be fobbed off with a 'morning sickness' diagnosis, dehydration in pregnancy is very dangerous, get them to check your urine for signs of ketones. You can get help for this!!

Poor you, and all other sufferers. It is so vile, and draining. My recommendations are dry bread, dry crackers, and boiled sweets e.g. sherbet lemons. I can sip coke, and water, but am worried about being dehydrated. Let's hope it passes soon...
