34 week scan and baby 7lb already!!!

I know that they are not always accurate, but this is my 2nd dc and rather worried about the fact my baby is 7lbs already with all measurements above the 95th centile - I still have 6-8 weeks to go!!
They are rescanning me at 38 weeks to see how much bigger my giant baby will be- beginning to think I should return my new baby clothes as by the looks of it they will be too small - any other mums had a similar experience and had a smaller baby than predicted??

My SIL was told this with all of hers. Her largest (dd3) was 6lbs 12oz, born 3 days late.

My mother was told I would be a whopper. I weighed 5lbs.

It is all very inaccurate. And in terms of giving birth, position and head circumference make the difference, not weight.

This won't reassure you but I had similar and ended up with an 11lb 3oz baby! He was an easy birth though - first contraction to arrival in less than 3 hours.

I was told ds1 weighed 6lb 1oz at 34 weeks. The hospital said he would be over 9lb at term.

I had him at 40 +3 and he was 8lb 2oz. Still felt like over 9lb though! Grin.

Julie- I hope you mean 7.2cm and not 72cm!

My sister was told she was having a big baby- was estimated as 7 1/2 lb at 33weeks.
He was 9lb 2oz at 39 weeks.

lol sorry yes meant 7.2!! - my last dd was only 7lb.8oz at 39 weeks and did have a HC of 38cm so she had a big head - I am hoping for 8-9lb ish but keeping my fingers crossed the head doesnt grow too much more and I dont go overdue - Thanks for all the stories will stop panicking now! :) x

Take it with a pinch of salt. I had late scans with both my babies, for various health reasons.

First baby - was told he'd was 'on target' to be about 8 lbs-ish. He was over 10 lbs. Second baby - was told I was 'samll for dates'. She was 7 lbs when I delivered at 37 weeks.

I was told that DS weighed about 7lb at 34 weeks. He arrived 2 days early weighing 9lb 7oz Smile

I was told at 36 weeks ds was 7.5lbs. He was born 2 weeks later at 7lbs. Hmm

All my babies have got progressively smaller. Now pg with #4. Perhaps it'll be a 6lb something baby this time!

I was told my ds was going to be big at a scan at 36 weeks. They were rights. He arrived at 36 + 6 at 8lb 10 oz. Very glad he arrived early!

Friend of mine was told she was having a whopper, lots of scans and concerns about gestational diabetes because of the size of the baby... He was born at term weighing a titchy 5lb12oz, so there is hope!

They aren't totally accurate anyway but i have had loads of scans throughout my 4 pgs (am diabetic so at risk of a large baby) and they told me DS was 6.5 lbs at the same stage as you. I had him by CS at 38 weeks bang on and he was just an oz short of 9lbs infact the doctor was surprised he weighed so little when he was born as when they took him out he was really chubby and they were having bets on his weight (you could see the chubby rolls on his arms in my last scan)

Saying that DD was born at 37 weeks and was a really skinny 6lbs so its just an estimate - dont worry :)

Sometimes think its best not to be told.. just worry what the 38week will say, but will do my best not to worry about as from all the responses that aren't exactly accurate! :)

I had weights estimated for 4 of my babies.

First estimated to be 9lbs at term, which my midwife scoffed at, saying it would be wrong as my baby was tiny, he was born the dau after he was due, 9lbs exactly.

Second estimated a bit over 9lb at 37 weeks, born at 38 weeks at 10lb exactly.

Twins estimated at 620g and 670g the day before they were born, weighed in at 620g and 674g, so very accurate.

Having big babies is great.

I had a scan during labour with my first and they were out by almost 1.5lbs.

Don't worry Smile

The sonographer who did my 34 weeks scan for ds1 told me (after I looked horrified when she said he could be 9lb+ at birth) reassured me that it is the head circumference of the baby that really makes a difference not so much the weigh as fat squeezes out. Luckily the only measurement of ds1's that was below average was his head circumference.

I know its about the size of the head - 35cm already and above the 95th centile!! Does anyone know how much babies heads grow! :)
