Blood clot and bleeding - please talk to me

Apologies for the graphic details - a bit gory :(

I'm 6 weeks 4 days gone and this morning I started bleeding heavily. Had a scan at hospital, baby is there but next to it is a 3cm blood clot (hematoma) that is causing the bleeding. Luckily it's at the side of the sac that is closer to the exit of the womb so it's not forcing the baby out ( which it would if it was behind the baby with the baby between the way to the cervix). Not sure if my explanation is making sense. The morning bleed had stopped by the time of the scan when i was told by the sonographer:

-Baby seems fine
-Bloodclot will cause further bleeding
-Could cause miscarriage if it pulls baby along
-rest won't make a difference

Since returning home I have been bleeding with clots for the last 5 hours, it's like a heavy period. No idea if baby has already gone, so sad and worried, has anybody experienced similar?

Hello - I had this but not quite so heavily. It lasted until about 13 weeks. Basically it's gravity pulling the blood out and it's very common. I think they called it a subchorionic hematoma. For me the blood stayed pretty dark and tapered off over a number of weeks. I had a healthy full term (two weeks late!) baby so hang in there :)

Hi Sandy, I had this at 6 weeks ... DS2 is now 20 months and absolutely fine. I had a further few bleeds between weeks 7-13 which they said was the clot bleeding out, but the clot got smaller and smaller and was barely visible by my 20 week scan.

Have you got another scan to check the baby again soon? Fingers crossed that everything turns out ok for you x

Cheers monkeytoo, sadly my bleeding is bright red and not brown, with clots and mucous strings I think. So scared, but it's good to hear your positive story, good luck x

Oh you poor thing, I'm so sorry you're going through this, it must be terrifying.

I don't know if this will help at all, but when I had my miscarriage at 7+1 there was quite a lot of painful cramping, and when the sac came out at the hospital, it was fairly obvious what it was. Sorry if too graphic, but if you've not had cramping or anything that looked much different than a large period-type clot, it really could still be ok. Fingers and toes crossed for you.

I had bright red blood with clotty bits in it too at first, then it trailed off to darker blood. If the bleeding continues ask to be re-scanned at the EPU.

Look after yourself tonight ... chocolate etc. Is your DP with you?

Thank you all, you're really kind. No chocolate but nice decaf tea from my mum in law that is visiting and helping greatly with my 2 year old DS.

Was so happy till today, baby is due on my birthday, which means if it dies, I will always miss him or her on my "special" day.

I bled heavily at ten weeks and passed some huge clots. Doctors were great as we were in another country scanned and gave me a hormone injection I was also given seven days bed rest. I spent the next few days worried sick but at each scan the area had shrunk and I am now 39 wks and the rest of my pregnancy has been fine. Try to take it easy think positive thoughts and take comfort in all the positive stories here it really helped me. Take care

The bleeding hasn't stopped since yesterday, and I try to stay lying down, it hurts more when I'm up. It's hard to remain optimistic to be honest.

Feeling better today, bleeding has lessened and I will go in for a scan on Monday morning.

Just to echo what Yank said, when I had a miscarriage it was very obvious when I lost the sac. It is grey, so looks distinctly different to normal bleeding/clots. If you haven't had this then there is plenty of reason to be hopeful!

Hello, hope you are still ok. I didn't mean to worry you by saying that my blood was brown, not red, these types of bleeds can definitely be red and still be ok so there is hope. I think it's very common to be told that you're miscarrying at this stage. Although you may be you may very well not be - it's just they always try to prepare you for it early on. I remember them handing me the leaflets on it even after a positive scan. Best of luck and thinking of you x

Thank you both - this is such a horrible rollercoaster, the minute I think the red bleeding has stopped, I get more clots the size of my thump. Not knowing what's going on is just killing me, and yet I dread finding out my baby is dead tomorrow.
