what dental work can i get free

Hi all.I am pg and so get the free dental treatment,what i was wondering is i need some bridge work or a little denture to close a gap in my teeth caused by losing teeth in my last pg.My dentist is nhs and i was wondering if anyone knew whether i could have this on the nhs as they were about 500 and that was just the denture.I know they are reluctant to do much these days.Thanks.

It's all free while your pregnant and for 12 months afterwards.
If the treatment is not suitable for preganancy eg you need lots of xrays to do it you could ask for the work to start after the birth.
I've ended up seeing the dentist 3 or 4 times so far and i'm only 5 months.
Dental health is really important in pregancy.

but i was wondering if they limit it to fillings etc.and i also needed to bridge before i was pg.I am going on the fact that our dentist sont even do a scal and polish on the nhs.

I need a bridge too but I don't think they'll do it as it counts as cosmetic, unless it's your front teeth. Don't quote me on that but I've a feeling it's just fillings and extractions etc.

It's only necessary work, AFAIK. So, a bridge which is cosmetic would not qualify. I had an old root canal treatment 'go bad' when my youngest was still under 1. NHS would only cover me to have the whole tooth pulled and leave me with a gap. I had to pay silly money to have the tooth re-treated so I didn't end up with a gap.
It was at the back of my mouth - apparently, if it had been at the front, the NHS would have been more likely to pay for it.

I was lucky. My dentist gave me a few procedures during pregnancy to take advantage of the free treatment period. But x-rays and mercury fillings would be out as someone has said.

i might ring the dental help line it seems a shame if i cant as it is affecting my other teeth,they get boob jobs round here if they cry enough

It depends what work your dentist does under the NHS scheme - most do a mixture of nhs and private and often only do more comestic or complicated work privately.

Before getting pg I switched to a private-only dentist as I was fed up of getting sub-standard work on the NHS - I had one filling filled with a temporary filling 3 times and the dentist said that they didn't get enough money from the NHS to warrant him doing it properly in one go!
