Grr I am not even superstitious but this freaks me out. My office window looks onto a tree. A lone magpie seems to nest in it so I see it several times a day. I hate myself for being worried about this though...

I saw one the other day but my cat took it down. I see this as a good omen.

shoot it up the arse?

magpies tend to live in pairs, are you sure it's the same one you keep seeing.

I have lots in the trees beside my house. I counted 9 the other day! Does any one know what that is?? The rhyme i know only goes up to 7!

I didn't know there was a tree rhyme. What is it?

Def the same magpie - there used to be two but has only been one for about a year. Lots of cats near here though so I suspect the other met a sticky end.

Just the 1 for sorrow, 2 for joy, 3 for girl 4 for a boy, 5 for silver, 6 for gold, 7 for a secret never to be told.

Maybe the 9 means i have a joyful secret, which I do, although more and mor people know now! :)

8's a wish
9's a kiss
10 is a bird you must not miss

I think you are supposed to salute or greet a lone magpie and that dispells the bad luck or something! :D

My hubby always thinks I'm mad when I salute lone magpies and ask after their families...but I'm not taking any chances LOL

Lunafire - that would of been my suggestion. Every morning just look out and "good morning Mr Magpie, how's the family".

I ALWAYS say it a lone magpie....

It's the only safe thing to do Luna. YOu are not alone, there are a lot of 'non superstitious' people out there who scratch their eyebrows surreptitiously and say something under their breath when they see a lone magpie.
