Hello! I am a new user on mumsnet having just read the mums on pregnancy book which i thought was fab. Anyway, i have just been told that i have got spd and am on crutches and am due to be housebound from next week (i refused this week because i want to get my 6 year old settled back at school). has anyone any practical tips or suggestions on how to deal with the spd? i have got the sexy belts etc and can't imagine the next 12 weeks being housebound - very dull!

Yep - its surprisingly common. Mine was complicated by a malformation of my sacro iliac joint that was discovered after my DD was born.

Make the most of resting - i know its the last thing you feel like but you will get better quicker after.

same with my sacro iliac - the right hand side is pointing the wrong way (apparently!). trying hard to rest but difficult with house being tip etc etc, feel bad that dh has to do housework on return from long day at work - going to look into cleaner i think - got to be worth it!

I've got it for the 2nd time now and I'm 8m pg. I found it much worse last time because I've been seeing an osteopath this time round (privately though, unfortunately). I've seen him for one session most weeks since I was about 6m pg and it has made a big difference. It's still bloody painful but I've noticed I'm using my crutches less and can do more than I did last time.

Lots of people swear by chiropractors and physios as well (have a good read of the threads about it). I'd definitely recommend something along these lines - don't just suffer! There's also a website here

and here's a vote for a cleaner too! Worth their weight in gold...

Had it from 30wks with no.1 and this time was on crutches from 12wks with no.2! its a pain in the bum, but the really bad pain disapeears as soon as you have given brith. it takes a while for you to get bck to normal. but it will get better.

I had it from 30 weeks with my second pregnancy, and now 15 weeks into my third pregnancy it's just starting to kick in . Six months seems like such a long time to be sitting on my bum, and who's going to do my housework?! Feeling pretty miserable at the moment.

hi also had sp with ds who is now 22mths and it was from around 30wks plus.
This time it has kicked in earlier around 14wks and I am just waiting my refferal to physio now as am at 25wks and at the point where i cant walk without wanting to cry.

Oh fellow sufferers - you poor things - i know about the feeling about walking and just wanting to cry, its really no fun. The heat is no good for the belts either is it? Its far too hot to have that thing strapped round keeping all my bits in place!!!!!

Ladies - if you can - invest in a pair of insoles called Mothersteps. You can get them from the Blooming Marvellous website. I think i put a link on the other link i mentioned earlier.

Oh, and rest plenty, but dont stay in the same position for too long either.

Good tip i got from physio (particularly in latter stages of pg) - put a pillow at both ends of the bed. Its easier to swing your legs out of bed and swing back down to the other end to change from side to side when sleeping rather than trying to roll - it puts alot of strain on the pelvis.

Im finding using ice for 10 mins at a time over joint really helps. Also prefering the tubigrip to the belt feels more supportive as goes right over bump as well!

When tubigrip is on you can fold it back downwards and over itself to give extra support under bump when you need it.

had spd really bad in my last pregnacy.
rented a tens machine from boots from about 32 weeks and found that it was a big help with the pain.
