I'm pregnant and my baby hass hiccups

Nearly every day for the last week or so of my pregnancy (I'm 36 weeks)my baby gets hiccups daily, does anyone know why, what causes this or any old wives tales about this??....

It's their diaphram getting ready to be used for breathing. And while it's an odd feeling, it's one that I really miss, I only had this with my first, with DD, who is nearly 13yo. Didn't have it with DS1 or DS2, and this time I haven't had it either (am 22+6)

I had this with DD. She continued with them after birth for quite a while too! Bless but annoying if you are trying to sleep.

Yes - for the first six months of life they can breathe/swallow at the same time (they lose the ability and you wean at six months) so their diaphragms practise for a while before birth. Hiccups are the inevitable result!

awww lovely memories for me when i was carrying dd2. She literally had hiccups all the way thru the pg.

They are a very good sign that your baby is doing what it should be doing

Frequent hiccups are a good sign of a healthy baby.

I had this all the time with DS... He got them constantly after he was born too, until he was about 16 weeks old and they settled down.

My midwife said it would stop when his diaphragm matured. Don't worry, it doesn't seem to bother them.

pebblejones - yes thats about the same with my dd2 and it settled down.

Can I just ask how you know if it's hiccups versus baby kicks? I'm having lots of kicks (28 weeks) but not sure how I'd know if they were hiccups?

iirc hiccups are little regular 'flicks' that last like our hiccups - one after the other for about 5 mins
