Hi ladies

This is my first post so bit nervous Oh and i'm 31 wks and hormonal....!

Due to Medical reasons I have to have a CS, this is my 2nd child and my first was an emergency section on NHS. I was going to go NHS this time, but I have been told that I cannot collect my babies cord blood privately at my local hospitals (which is a whole new thread!!). So I am going Private which my insurance helps out with costs, thankfully. Top of the options was the Portland, but which consultant do you choose - Dr Gibb, Maggie Blott, Pat o'Brien, these seem to be the names cropping up on here, but no recent posts. Also, I rang the Portland yesterday and they have an ICU for the babies and an HDU for the mum, as this was my main concern. As its ok having a nice room etc, but when push comes to shove, I want to make sure if something goes wrong i'm not in an ambulance going to an NHS hospital!!!

Please can anyone give any advice of what consultant you have seen, I know they all have their pros and cons and also what you thought of the Portland.

Thanks in advance....

my SIL has had all her children in the portland under Mr Economedies. Check him out on google, he is supposed to be the best.

I am with Maggie Blott and had amazing recommendations by midwives, consultants and previous patients when doing my research. Best of luck!

I had DS at Portland with Guy Thorpe-Beeston, he was great - although I didn't have CS - and am now booked with him for DC2. Have friend who had bad experience with Dr Gibb with CS - very painful scar, took a long time to heal and she won't go back with him again. Portland was great, fantastic care both during delivery and after birth.

You can have your cord blood collected at a NHS hospital - just not by NHS staff. Needs to be done by company storing cord blood. The guidance surrounding obtaining commercial cord blood applies to private and NHS hospitals. Has the Portland staff agreed to collect the blood?

I had C section at Portland with Jonathan Brooks.

He also collected stem stells at time of birth (there are various companies you can go with, I went with "Smart Cells") and he is well used to the procedures of all the companies.

Would highly recommend him.
