diahrrea in early pregnancy - TMI alert!

Hi all,

I'm 5 weeks pregnant and have been up all night with terrible diahrrea (sorry for TMI!). I suffer with IBS and initially thought it must that but then I nearly threw up. I very, very rarely vomit (I have a spectacularly good gag reflex), but I was dry heaving over the toilet, and went all clammy and shaky which for me is the equivalent of someone else bringing up the entire contents of their stomach.

I feel awful this morning, have had to call in sick - I started walking to work and had to turn back as I was so wobbly and shaky. I havehad diahrrhea a couple more times and I keep doing foul tasting burps.

Anyway, to get to the point - has anyone else had this in early pregnancy or does it sounds like a virus? Any tips for coping with this? I seem to remember my IBS flaring up when I was first pg with DS but it wasn't like this!

Hiya,

I had diarrhea in early pregnancy - felt like a dodgy tummy from about 5 weeks to 7 weeks (I think) - probably not quite that bad, but it felt painful sometimes in my gut for several weeks.

It could be a virus, in which case keep your fluids up and rest, and eat things like dry toast and bananas (according to my GP they are "binding" foods...!). But if you still feel this bad after a day or so I'd definitely give your GP a call just to check.

Congrats on your pregnancy!! Hope you feel better soon,

xxx

Of course it could be viral or mild food poisoning but diarrhoea in early pregnancy is very, very, very common. You just don't hear about it as much as you hear about the constipation. I always have an upset stomach for the first few weeks.

It won't affect your baby, I promise.

Thanks.

It's very to imagine it not affecting the baby when you're cramping etc....!

I'm 5 weeks too and I had sickness and diarrhoea that lasted for 2 days at the weekend. It's taken 4 days to properly get my appetite back. I saw GP today as I was still weak and suffering from terrible headache. ( I went to work this morning but left after an hour as I felt really shaky and sick)

Doctor said it's likely to have been a virus, not anything to worry about, but stressed that rest is important and just said to increase fluids and eat whatever I fancy for a bit until I get my strength back up.

I had similar with both my pregnancies. Second time was terrible. I was up all night for nearly a week. It did go away though.
