Potty training

Anyone else attempting potty-training over Christmas? Want to hold hands?

DS1 is 2.10 and has been doing a wee in the potty at bathtime for ages. Tomorrow we are going to put him into pants and see what happens!

We are having Christmas at home (and no visitors til Boxing Day) so seems as good a time as any to try. If he is still having more than a few accidents by middle of next week then I'll put him back in nappies for another month or two.

Anyone else tackling it at the same time?

I'm thinking of it... DD is only 23 months but absolutely detests nappies. She will easily wee in the potty if it's around and has done this for well over six months. So I was thinking of taking the nappies off, turning the heating up and seeing what happens... Won't be till Boxing Day though as we're out and about till then.

We are too! My DS is 2.4, and I am a teacher, so school holidays best time for us. Am psyched up for it, have 20 pairs of pants and lots of chocolate buttons!

Happy to hold hands, so to speak!

Yes, tis only a metaphorical holding of hands -- think I will need both mine to clear up all the mess

We were due to start tomorrow but DH's work do is tonight so have postponed til Sunday as he'll be in no fit state to help tomorrow!

I'm potty training one of my mindee's (have been for past few weeks) and first week was fab (has been doing it at home with mum for ages) second week not so well and I wanted to give up if I'm honest but we persevered and this week has been fab again so it's been an up and down road but hand holding is very important!

My useful products..(as well as sweets)

and get plenty of stickers

this is fab, you need 2 though one to wash and one to have on

DS 2y8 m have been going about a week or so now. It's mostly fine when we take him to the toilet every hour but he's not telling us he needs to go if we miss it iyswim Don't know what to do to make that happen for him

SPB - personally if he's not asking, noth bothered about being in nappies, not bothered if he's wet dirty I would just try again in a few months. Still sit him on and encourage until he wants to do it for himself?

StealthPolarBear · 18/12/2009 19:11

that's the thing thouigh, other than that he's showing loads of interest - big boy pants, "i go toilet", weeing, gflushing, handwashing...would be cruel to put him back in nappies now

LoveMyGirls · 18/12/2009 19:16

Ah well maybe try it for a bit longer then, maybe try a sticker for every time he asks? then phase them out?

Ooh good, lots of company

SPB obviously I'm a novice but I have plenty of friends with DC coming up to 3 who have been out of nappies for months, and most of them still have to be asked every 15 minutes if they need to go!

Really MB?? I don't really class that as trained then. Although we don't ask if he needs to go, we just take him there! If asked, the answer is no, followed by a puddle 10 mins later Nice to know he's not doing too badly though.
Good luck to everyone wanting to start 2010 with a toilet trained toddler! I will keep an eye on this thread

Well, we started this morning. So far: one wee in potty, one wee and poo in pants.

How is everyone else doing?

Help- my son has just turned 3 and still in nappies. I think he has awareness and control - but refuses to go in the potty or toilet. Yesterday he was out of his nappy for 7 hours and didn't wee or poo. I got neurotic about urine infections and put a nappy on him. He'll now sit on the potty with his trousers down (even that was a struggle) but will not do anything. Any advice?

Hi Confused7, I'm new to potty-training so no advice I'm afraid -- maybe start a new thread and you will hopefully get some suggestions.

Going well here -- no more accidents since this morning, three wees and one poo in potty!

Hi, we're now 2 days in. a few wees in potty yesterday followed by one (huge) wee in knickers.

Today two wees on the potty but we went out over lunch and DD forgot (despite reminders and sitting on the loo) and did a big poo in knickers.

I'm slightly worried because DD doesn't seem to be drinking very much despite encouragement... See how it goes as it all settles down. I might not drive for 1.5 hrs each way to visit a friend tomorrow though.

Two wees in pants today (plus two wees and a poo in potty). Like SPB's DS, he will go on the potty if we get him on at the right time (though sometimes needs cajoling to go on there) but always says no if asked if he needs to go!

Hi there! Can we join in too? DS is 2.11. We have just started on Sat. DH and I both have 2 weeks off over xmas and DS no pre-school so seemd a good time to start. Have had a few unsuccessful attempts over last few months and have never pushed it, thinking we didn't want to turn it into a battle, but determined now to go completely cold turkey on nappies and suffer the consequences. Yesterday went well (2 wees and one poo in potty) but today disaster. DS dancing around for hours obviously holding it in and saying his willy was hurting. But point blank refusing to go to toilet or potty despite every bribe we could think of (sticker chart, chocolate coins, decorating potty with stickers, daddy sitting on potty, mummy sitting on potty, teddy sitting on potty, choose new potty in shop, et etc). Followed by "I'm doing a wee" and wee all over floor. This has happened 3 times today now. How is everyone else doing?
(BTW, Meg, I remember you from lots of posts from when DS was little!)

hi, I'm potty training too! dd is 2.4 and we bought new potty, armed selves with choc and spent whole day indoors with naked bottom half. Not one single accident!!! every wee and one (enormous) poo on potty. Only time she needed reminding was when I saw the "poo face" all other times she took ehrself to do a we! am thrilled.... tomorrow however she's probably going back in nappies as its a nursery day :/

Not going so well today. Denied needing the potty all morning then did a huge poo and wee in pants.

Am contemplating giving up, but is that a bit lightweight to quit after three days?

Meg, same here! Massive tantrums all day yesterday and same again today. Absolutely point blank refusing to go onto potty or toilet. It's turned into a huge battle and I'm now thinking this is just counter-productive as all that's happening is that all of us are getting more and more wound up. Don't know what to do! Let me know what you decide...

We put him back in nappies this afternoon

He refused to sit on the potty, denied needing it then did a huge wee in his pants, which he didn't even notice! I figured if he can't or won't tell me when he needs to go, it's going to be pointless carrying on.

Will try again at half term when at least the weather will be a bit better!

Hope the rest of you have better luck...
