Am I doing it right?

Ok, I don't have any experience potty training kids and don't know if what I'm doing with DS is right. He will be 3 in July. We tried it a few months ago with a potty but he didn't understand at all. He is speech delayed but the speech has recently 'clicked' and he speaks more now. I don't know if that's relevant or not.

We decided to put him straight onto the big toilet with a child's seat. When he sits on it he knows what to do, he can 'pee on command' I guess. But can only go around half an hour without an accident (today he had an accident 15 minutes after peeing in the toilet). He doesn't know when he needs to go.

We have only been doing the toilet training in the house, if we are out and about then he's back in a nappy. Should we be keeping him in nappies when out? Or is that hampering progress? If we keep going the way we are, will he eventually learn to hold it in? Or is he just not ready? As I say, I'm totally new to this and not sure what to do. Thanks.

Honestly I wouldn't bother right now.

Once they're ready, it's easy. If it's not easy, then wait a bit.

How long have you been trying for? On day 1 my daughter went through 10 pairs or knickers and on day 7 one, we just persevered and kept taking her to the toilet and sitting her on it every 30 mins. Which we did for at least a month afterwards. We also bought a travel potty to take out with us. We too went straight to a seat in the loo, if I was getting rid of nappies there was no way I wanted to tart cleaning a pooy potty!!

It's only been a week so I'm probably expecting too much! He goes to nursery in the afternoons in August and is supposed to be toilet trained by then. I'll maybe keep going with it for a bit and see how he does.
