We started training our ds at Christmas, just after he turned 2. Young, I know but he was showing all the signs of readiness and did amazingly well - after the first couple of days we were getting maybe 2 accidents a week. This lasted about 6 weeks. He was also getting us up at night to go for a wee, and nappies were dry most mornings. So far so good. However, dh was getting a bit ground down with the night wakings, ds2 was about 8 weeks so I was dealing with him overnight. He had a word with ds1 along the lines of "you can wee in your nappy at night". We did discuss it but I didn't think very hard about it. In hindsight we should have tried reducing drinks in the evening etc first. Anyway, outcome was an almost immediate increase to a couple of accidents a day, and since then it got worse and worse to the point where a few weeks ago we went back to nappies. I think there was more than 1 reason for it - sudden realisation that ds2 was here to stay, none of his friends at nursery were potty training so he was having to leave toys to go to the loo, back molars coming through making poo looser, so maybe more difficult to tell it's coming, a little bit of attention seeking, but I still reckon it really didn't help for dh to make it ok to wee in nappy at night!!! We've backed off totally, he uses the potty if he wants but otherwise we aren't mentioning it, and hoping he'll tell us when he wants to wear pants again. He definitely can do it - if he's not wearing anything on his bottom he uses the potty no problem, and no accidents. I think he just can't tell (fair enough) whether he's in a nappy or pants so doesn't choose to go.
Sorry for the long post. Just not sure where to go from here - he talks about "when I am bigger I will wear pants", but no signs yet. I'm just feeling we mucked it up at the start, and want to believe it's retrievable!
