Potty training

Should we keep going?! Please help!

I wonder if you could offer some advice about potty training. We are on day 4 of Potty Training my 28 month old. She's doing well but won't tell us when she needs to go. We put her on 3-4 times per hour depending on how much juice she has had and she usually goes. We have had one accident per day on days 2-4 (3 on day 1). I don't want to give up and confuse her but should we continue if she isn't telling us? Please help, all advice & experience welcomed.

We tried earlier in the year but she wasn't at all responsive so stopped after a day, she has done much better this time around. We started as she was asking to use the toilet, which I now think was out of interest/being a novelty maybe more than being ready.

Really at odds whether to keep going or give up, I have no other children so have no experience to compare it to. Husband says to keep going, its me who regrets starting!

Would be grateful for any wisdom, thank you in advance x

I wouldn't stop. I think she's old enough to learn.

I just trained dd (2.7) and did it by taking away the nappies. Put her in knickers and leggings and day 1. I reminded her about potty every 20 mins or so. She wet herself 4 times. But I managed to catch the poo in the potty.
Day 2 she knew it was happening but still wet herself. Just couldn't say anything fast enough.
Day 3 she could tell me and I had about 5 seconds to get her on the potty.
Day 4, no accidents and again short notice.
Day 5, she just did it herself.
We are about 10 days or so on now and she is completely independent. Dry at night now as well! this was a shock

I tried before and she wasn't ready. I think they need to have the accidents to realise they don't like it and they learn to hold it.
Today, dd was playing in the garden and then came running in, took off her jacket, found the potty, pulled down jeans and knickers and did a wee. So she can control it.

Keep going a little longer. Maybe if at 2 weeks she hasn't got it, then reconsider.

Thanks littlemiss - we have gone cold turkey too, the pull ups..i tried one and she said "thats not big girl knickers thats a nappy" (no flies on her!). She has been dry for her naps (2 hours) on 3 days. Reassuring to hear other experiences.

She is definitely holding poos more than normal and they are more solid than normal i think (tmi sorry!). Thats a bit worrying.

2 accidents today, both of the wee variety. Both times she had had a lot of juice/milk and both times she had been put on the loo about 5-10 mins before. Seems like her bladder got overwhelmed on those occasions.

Any other opinions? Would be grateful to hear from those on the other side or in the middle! :D

We're similar (I've written a colossal post just now entitled advice wanted please). Dry for naps, clean from day 1, occasional accidents but doesn't ask to go. Will be watching this post for advice too, good luck :) x

Thanks yappchat, we aren't clean but i think one/two accidents a day sounds acceptable for day 4.

I think you have to give her a chance, it doesn't seem fair to give up so soon

It seems forever - but a fortnight of perseverance and she'll crack it im sure.

There are days when I think it would have been easier if we never potty trained as we forever have to dash to the loo (he's decided he's too posh for a potty now Hmm) in public places but he doesn't really have more than three accidents in a week now and I count him as potty trained. I think accidents continue till about 5-6 tbh.

Went off on a tangent without delivering the actual advice I intended to Blush

Meant to say - I found my DS didn't need to go as much as I thought he should, it became a battle as I wanted to put him on the potty and interrupt his play so he saw it as an annoyance not something to be proud of. When I decided just to ask him "if you need the potty, what do you do?" He grinned "tell mummy" and now his mantra as he leaves the house for nursery is "remember no nappy so if you need the potty tell mummy"

I just made a giant song and dance of praising him when he made it - he soon became eager and I wasn't interrupting what he wanted to do anymore...

Thanks ShootPeppaPig (hilarious name btw!) - my husband thinks we should give her a chance but I don't want to confuse her. She says "dont go weewee in knickers" and "go wee wee on potty" when I ask her what she should be doing so she does know, I just don't know if her brains registering it which is why I'm fretting that it is too soon?

I have stopped putting her on every 5-10 minutes and leaving it every 15-20 at the moment, I do ask her in between just to remind her but she says no every time.

It seems like its more common than I thought. I am fed up of hearing "ooh my child was trained in 3 days and dry at night too" - I'm certain that does happen to some but not the majority!

Shootpeppapig, thanks this helps me too. She has never been a big drinker and so I do get her to go lots more than she actually needs to so I could lay off her a bit more tomorrow...

I praised the achievements ALOT! Took a photo of her next to her potty that had the first wee in it etc.

Also I got all her favourite leggings out and made a big thing out of it like 'look! Do you want to wear peppa pig leggings today??' And she got excited. Then when she wet herself I would explain that she would have to wear boring grey ones now as peppa pig ones are all wet. She got quite upset so I washed and dried them and said 'ok let's try again, but you need to use your potty or peppa will be wet again and you'll have to take them off'
It seemed to help!

Realise my first post sounded a little boastful - it's really not. This was the third attempt and this time it clicked.
I am dreading going out in public though. I have a 7 month old and no idea what I will do if I have to do an emergency toilet run!!!

Glad it helped, I think at first it takes some time to get used to the sensation of being wet and also in control, small kids don't seem to have the ick factor - getting wet a few times is probably fairly interesting to begin with Grin

I like the peppa pig leggings suggestion, wish I'd done that with DS but EVERY pair of joggers he owns have thomas on! (Sportsdirect sale)

We did go buy thomas pants though... He proudly carried them showing everyone on the bus home that day Smile

Hi littlemiss, I didn't think it was boastful at all, I thought it was a great post, very helpful :)

I like the idea of the leggings, wonder if that would help here though you are also right, they don't get the ick factor like we would!

Some small successes so far, put her on every hour and she went every time, no accidents in between :D an improvement from putting her on every 15-20mins. Put her on before lunch, she went and then had a huge wee in her highchair.

Noticing a pattern though, 3 of the accidents have been when she has downed a load of juice in a short space of time. Not ideal but I like patterns and explanations!

I am dreading a public adventure too, no juice allowed !Grin Wink

Thought I would do an update as it might be useful for both myself and anyone new who finds my thread and wonders how it went/is going:

Day 1 - 4 wet accidents. Putting on toilet every 15-20 minutes
Day 2 - no wet accidents, pooey surprise in knickers :( putting on toilet every 20 minutes
Day 3 - 1 wet accident, putting on toilet every 30 minutes
Day 4 - 2 wet accidents, putting on toilet every 30 minutes
Day 5 - 1 wet accident (after a lot of juice), putting on toilet every 40 minutes, she asked to go to the toilet and had a poo.
Day 6 - 1 wet accident (my fault, forgot to ask), putting on every hour.
Day 7 - woke up dry after the night, asked to go to the toilet for a poo . putting on toilet approx. every hour. no accidents!!
Day 8 - did not wake up dry. asked to go to toilet for a poo. Putting on toilet every 60-75 minutes. currently no accidents...bet I've jinxed it!

Dry after 2 hour nap each day from day 3. Think we have made poo progress, she seems to be holding wees but not asking to go for that yet. Glad we perservered at this point, may regret it still in the future but thats how I feel right at this moment.

day 8 - no accidents

day 9 - ventured out for the first time with a pull up, put on the loo all day, dry pull up all day and asked to poo on the toilet. Not dry after nap.

day 10 - ventured out for the second time with a pull up, put on the loo all day, dry pull up all day and asked to poo on the toilet.

day 11 - ventured out for a 3rd time with pull up in the morning, dry all morning, wee'd on the toilet. Went knickers only in the garden in the afternoon, asked to go to the toilet about 5 times, put her on the potty, no poos. In hindsight think she wanted to go on the big toilet not the potty. Cue a massive poo in her knickers. Then 3 wet accidents despite being put on the toilet just prior to one of them :( Feel like we have gone back to day 1.

Any advice? (thanks if you got this far)

I'm in the same boat. DD is 3 in June (have been putting off potty training as we have a new baby too!). I thought she'd be well able at this age but she doesn't seem to know when a wee is coming. She gets the whole concept & asked for the potty when she needed a poo yesterday & has done loads of wees in it when I ask her to sit on it but still seems taken by surprise when she has an accident.

Day 3 today and this afternoon I've decided not to put her on the potty anymore and see if a few accidents make her realise what's happening. If she doesn't get it by end of tomorrow I'm going to put her back in nappies & try again in a month. I'd rather that than drag this out.

I think by day 3-4 they should be asking for the potty or frequently asked if they need a wee rather than being put on it at intervals. DS was definitely easier to train!

One brilliant tip I heard today is if you have to use a pull up for whatever reason eg trip to the shops, put knickers on underneath so they can feel the wet, otherwise it's just like a nappy.

Also once they can hold it long enough to get to the potty I wouldn't worry too much about going out & about. DS was petrified on noisy hand dryers in public toilets and from very early on if we were in the shops we'd have to go home if he needed to wee (we only live across the road but a good 10 minute walk for little legs). You'd be surprised how long they can hold it.

We are on day 3 of potty training my 2.7 year old. My DS is still having accidents but is enjoying using the potty and sometimes holds a wee for 1.5 hours then goes on potty when prompted. He initiated it by refusing to wear a nappy and prior to this had been sitting on the potty in the afternoons last week. He has preschool on Wednesday and Thursday mornings for 3 hours. As he is still having accidents and still needs prompted should I send him in pull ups or would that confuse him? We have one more day at home tomorrow, I also have a 9 month old and we go swimming whilst DS is at preschool so I kind of need to send him. Any thoughts appreciated! Thanks.
