Fear of pooing in potty?

My 2 year old DS got the hang of weeing in the potty really quickly and now nearly always goes by himself without being prompted. However he is reluctant to use the potty for a poo: he seems to actually try to hold it in all day, periodically clutching his bottom and crying, until he has the inevitable accident, sometimes right next to the potty itself all down his legs, over his shoes and the floor - which appears to distress him even more. I don't understand what the issue is, and since he doesn't talk very well I can't ask him. He has done poos in the potty a couple of times, for which he got massive praise /stickers/ treats, and he definitely isn't constipated or anything. Anyone out there know what's going on, and how we can get over this hump?

I had this with ds he would just look at me with a pained expression clutching his bum.

We skipped the potty and went straight to the toilet. When I knew he needed to poo I sat him on the toilet and we watched poo goes to poo land. He relaxed enough to let go. After a couple if times we have no problems now.
