Potty training

DD likes to go in the garden!

My DD is 2.5 and been very resistant to potty training, although I am convinced she is ready. She can hold herself for hours when not wearing a nappy, and will ask me to put one on her so she can 'go'. She point blank refuses to go in the potty, and pretends that it 'hurts' her to sit on the toilet (with a kiddy seat attached). I would be tempted to just forget all about it and try again in 6 months or so, but she is so obviously capable of going to the toilet - for the last few months she has asked me to put a nappy on her so she can use it (and then takes it off herself when it's dirty), and now she asks me to open the back door for her to go in the garden (she has a little spot where she likes to crouch down, and then she comes and tells me what she's done!!). What do you think? Her communication skills are great and I can't see why if she can ask for a nappy or to go outside, she won't ask me to use the potty. She has used the potty once or twice and we all cheered and congratulated her. She was very pleased with herself but has no interest in doing it again!

I'm potty training too - delightful job isn't it?! Have you tried rewards for going on the potty/toilet? Something she really loves? For dd it was an ink stamp on her hand for ds it is a haribo

I suppose the garden is progress from doing it in her nappy! Grin

Maybe the potty is uncomfortable, could you try a different one? We have a big lindam one which is also a stool and the rim comes off as a toilet seat. Ds struggles with the smaller ones at nursery.

I'm sure she will get there, I would persevere. If you think she's ready, I don't see the point in going back.

Stick a potty in the garden, where she likes to go. X
