Potty training

At what age did you start to potty train your LO?

Just curious really.

DD is still a little bit too young for potty training as she's only just turned one, but want to know what I'm aiming for, if that makes sense.

When did you start and at what age were they successfully dry during day and/or night?

I started both mine off first time about 2 ish and stopped when I realised they weren't ready, gave it a month and tried again.

DD1 was 2yr 4mnths when she got it and followed at night pretty quick.

DD2 was 2 yr 8 months when dry in the day and is still wet at night - she's only 2 and 10 now

DN was 3 and a bit when trained in the day and has only just lost her nappy at night at aged 6.

ds - 2
dd1 - about 21months
dd2 - about 22/23months

All dry during day pretty quickly (although dd1 regressed when her CM started putting her in pull ups, after she was already dry

Night - ds was about 2y6m (it was by accident, he'd been in his PJs for a while before going to bed and then we put him to be without thinking and he was dry all night!)
dd1 - can't really remember, but I'd guess about 2y 8 or 9m
dd2 - about 7yrs.

Started about 18 months with 3 of them (just bascially putting them on a potty now and again and making a huge fuss if theybused it)

Ds1 got interreupted by arrival of DS2 so i gave hp dry - 2.5
Ds2 - dry 2.2
Dd -dry 2.1 (though not at night)

Ds was 3 until he was reliably dry through the day and would go by him self. Started at two, left it couple of months and tried again, no big deal or pressure. He got the hang of it by 2.7 at home , out the house he got distracted a lot or couldn't wait that long so rather than having accidents out the house he used a nappy or potty if at someone else's house. He started pre school in September at 3.2 and had a few wee accidents again for the first couple of weeks because he got so distracted bless him, but he's used to it now. He's only just been dry at night, a really heavy sleeper.

The starting point is when they know they have done a wee and asked to be changed and then tell you they are doing a wee in nappy, having dry nappies is a sign they can hold it. then you can take nappy off and leave a potty out, explain what it's for etc. praise when they use it. I do think it's a gradual process with most children.

When they were dry at night, which was about 23m.

We had a potty around from as soon as dd could walk, older children used it and she saw the example and copied, unreliably at first but was soon pulling down her pull ups.
We had a proper potty training campaign before she turned two (new nursery didn't want to do nappies..) and it took about 4 weeks and she was dry at night as soon as she was dry in the day.

Example is good, girls seem generally earlier than boys, the one thing I learned was that you must be consistent throughout, the potty goes everywhere with you/or the loo seat

DT done and dusted before they were 2. DD dry at night by then, DS took a while longer to be dry at night.

With both around 10 months I started putting on toilet at bathtime. By 12 months I put on at each nappy change ( didn't see the point in clean nappy being weed in 2 mins later). Both things really helped I think as meant neither liked staying in a wet/ dirty nappy. Cloth nappy so feel wet quicker

Ds1- dry 18 months
Ds2 - dry 22 months

Tried it when they were around 2.6 and it didn't work. So I left them in pull ups for a few months, encouraged them to use the potty or toilet and tried again when I was off work over Xmas. So DS was 3.2 and DD was 3.4.

Ds1 and DD were 2yrs 9mths and were toilet trained within 24hrs. No accidents, no potties. They were both dry at night a couple of weeks later. DS2 was about 3.4yrs and again toilet trained within 24hrs. No accidents and no potties. Dry at night at the same time but I kept the bed inco sheeted for a bit longer as he is a heavy sleeper.

I'm a firm believer in leaving toilet training late. I cannot cope with poo on plastic so have always stuck them straight on the loo.

DD trained during the day at 2.7, had it in a day and a half. Still wears a nappy at night.

DS1 started trying at 2.5. He got wees quickly but not poos at all, so after about a month gave up for another 6 months. Then it took him about a month to get it. Still not dry at night at 4.5 unless we take him to loo when we go to bed.

DS2 waited until 2.10. 2 weeks in and he is dry day and night (I am in shock, after the trauma of DS1's poos everywhere). He won't sit on toilet though, only potty.

Signs there are ready is dry nappy after quite a long period/ after a nap (shows they can hold it in) and it also helps if they show they can wee on demand (used to try it before bathtime).

DD about 2.3 - dry in a couple of days, poo took about a week, but she wasn't dry at night for at least another year.

DS was 22 months and was dry day and night in less than a week. I put him on the potty at bath time from about 18 months and it did really help me to know when he was ready.

OP, there's a huge variation in when they'll be ready and you really don't want to try it before that because it's just lots of angst for everyone. For most children, when they are ready it will be pretty straightforward. So look for signs from your child, rather than aiming for a certain age.

DS is 3.3 and although capable point blank refuses to train. HV was saying today that schools don't get concerned or refer until 6 or 7.

Blimey I'm seriously impressed with this. Your children seem to get it really early (and quickly!). Am amazed. Dd at 2.5 years just into third week still having accidents. Should I give up for a bit?

DS is 2.8. We started three weeks ago and he's dry for pees in the day, but still poops during his afternoon nap. I would have started earlier (and I think he might have been ready around 2.4) but we moved house, I had a difficult pregnancy and he had a new baby brother, all within the same month.
