Potty training

When to expect asking for the potty?

I started potty training my 2.6 year old yesterday and she is doing fine so far, we are using a sticker reward chart system with a promise of some new bath crayons if it is sufficiently filled up by the end of the week, we had 4 stickers for wees in the potty yesterday and 6 so far today (along with a couple of accidents on the floor). I haven't read any of the potty training books or anything, so far I have just been encouraging her to sit on the potty for as long as possible with stories, colouring in and small toys and giving lots of praise when she does something in the potty. This is great progress for us, before yesterday she refused to entertain the idea of sitting on the potty at all and I'm hoping that the action of actually peeing on the potty will get her more aware of when she is peeing and then learn to recognise when she needs to pee before it happens. A couple of times today I've asked if she needed to pee and been told no but then she's done it on the floor seconds later, realistically how long should I be expecting it to be before she will actually admit to needing a pee or go to the potty herself instead of having an accident?

I have been potty training my son since April and he still doesn't ask me for the potty, we still have accidents.

I remember the first few days being horrendous with puddles of pee everywhere.

We haven't had too many puddles of pee but I have been using a pull up nappy on her if I have to leave her in another room for a few minutes to go and make lunch or something, I'm not a big fan of pull ups and would rather just use pants exclusively but I'm worried the cat will walk through any resulting puddles and jump on the furniture/walk it all through the house and I can't watch DD for accidents every single minute of the day so for my own sanity I'm using a pull up. Looks like we might be doing the distraction potty time thing at regular intervals for a while then.

Hello! DD is also 2.6, she decided she wanted to be out of nappies when DS arrived 9 weeks ago.

I had tried a few times half heartedly, she didn't seem ready and I tried her in some tots bots training pants. They are reusable pants with a PUL liner and towelling layers inside. So it holds a small wee and makes them damp without it going everywhere. These seemed to help her know when she needed to go without making a big mess.

She's been in knickers the last three weeks and can mostly tell me when she needs a wee or poo but we still have a few accidents.

I've had to revise her wardrobe to make it easier to get down in a rush. We've gone back down a dress size as she no longer has the bulk of her nappy holding her clothes up.

I use stickers and sweeties for rewards. We started with a sweetie per pee on the potty. Poo's get a sweet at the moment, but now she is happy doing them, we will revise the reward, maybe sweet for a dry day.

I never asked ds of he needed to go,I just took him to the toilet after meals and when we were out. It was months later when he went off by himself.

Sorry, forgot to say...

I put her on the potty every half hour the first few days and asked her if she felt she needed a wee. Then made the gap longer as the week progressed.

I do find that asking her prompts her to think about it, often her first answer is no and then she needs a pee a few minutes later.

Even now I prompt her after 2 hours with no pee.

Today was a bad day, sainsbury's for a quick shop 3 accidents in between 3 successful loo visits (including a poo!) good job I was buying more pants and leggings Smile should have taken 30 minutes took nearly 2 hours :/

DD seems quite happy to sit on the potty for long periods of time, we have had lots of pees in the potty the last couple of days and she is definitely getting more aware of when she is going so that's progress but I have been relying on pullups for going to the shops and at mealtimes (she is a terrible eater so I don't want accidents to interfere with eating or I will never get any food into her) but I'm building up the nerve to ditch daytime nappies/pullups altogether and go for exclusively pants to see what happens.

Well she is doing really well and is asking for the potty for wees no problem now (although I do still remind her often to go) but hasn't done so yet for a poo, we've had 2 poos in pants today. I know from her body language when she needs to poo but she just won't sit on the potty to do it, I'm thinking of resorting to bribery with chocolate for poo in the potty, only been doing stickers so far.

We've been using a jelly baby based bribery system :) it got her doing poo's especially when I advised her that every poo that isn't in her potty mummy or daddy get to eat the jelly baby. She was making a fuss of having a nappy put on for a poo, but that has now stopped.

First poo in the potty today after withholding it for 4 days, made a huge fuss of her and she is so pleased with herself Grin. Hopefully we are on the right tracks now, once we are reliably getting poos in the potty it's time to start encouraging the use of the toilet instead so I can pop her on a loo when out and about instead of having to lug a potty around.

Can anyone advise me on 2.3 ds?

He is fine If in no pants, but as soon as pants go on its hopeless. He makes no effort to take them down (despite us showing him etc), won't say that he needs to go and gets very upset if I actively take him to the potty at regular intervals. He won't let me help with his pants either. Am at my wits end!

Thanks x
