Potty training

4 year old dry at night in pull ups but not without!

My son is 4 and has been potty trained in the day since 2.5. He has worn pull ups at night until three nights ago. We decided to try him out of pull ups as he was mostly dry with them - I would say in the last month he had only one or two wet pull-ups in the morning. Prior to starting without them they'd been dry for over a week. However, for both nights that he's been without them he's wet the bed and woken to tell us by crying out. I haven't got a clue whether taking him out of pull ups is the right thing, and if now isn't the right time, when is? His waking in the night is particularly difficult because it then takes me ages and ages to get back off to sleep - not great when you've got a stressful job to go to as well! So any advice would be very much appreciated.

Why not just leave him in the pull-ups? No point in subjecting yourself and him to unnecessary stress.

I don't mind leaving him in pull ups but what I'm unsure about is when is a better time to try him without, if not now?

It's one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions! Are you in a particular hurry to get him out of pull-ups? I left my DS (now 8) in pull-ups until he told me he didn't need them. I think he was nearly four. Wet beds are such a horrible experience for all concerned that I would have done anything to avoid them!

Night wetting is a hormonal thing and not really something you can force or predict. My guess would be that he's subconsciously nervous when he doesn't have them and that kinda overrides his normal
Pattern. I'd just leave him in pull ups. Saves changing the bed at four in the morning and saves upsetting him. Don't worry :) many kids are in pull ups or Pyjama pants til 6/7/8 it's normal :)

I know, it's horrible! Strangely, my son says he doesn't want to go back to pull ups - not sure if he's that bothered by the night time disturbance. Wish I could be that positive!

If he doesn't want to go back to pull-ups, how about pyjama pants/drynites? You could sell them to him as for big boys. I wet the bed until I was eight so I feel very sympathetic to kids who take a bit longer to manage being dry at night.

Thanks for the reassurance that it's normal. As he's 99% dry at night in pull ups I'm not sure when we'll try without them again. Perhaps when he's a little older...
