holding in - what is normal?

DS1 has been asking to go to the toilet for the past few days - not consistently but sometimes and there has only been a couple of accidents. anyway - he is managing to hold in for hours and now I'm worried if he's holding in too long he might get an infection...I know I shouldn't complain but should I just let him hold it as long as he can or take him after a few hours? If I ask him if he is needing the toilet he just says no thanks (very polite!) but then sometimes he says he is needing...confused. Today he held in from 10.50am till 1430! Sometimes he also does get the damp patch in his pants. I think he just cant be bothered to interrupt what he is doing to go to the loo but I do think he is starting to understand it all a bit better now...what do you think?

Its gd he can hold it that long, and it doesn't sound like a horrendously long time. My ds gas been trained for a while now but sometimes only goes 3 times a day, other times more. A lot obv. depends on how much he's been drinking. Maybe don't ask your ds so much,pt really clicked with mine when I let him have control...didn't ask if he wanted to go just told him he had to use the potty/toilet or tell me. I wouldn't even ask before we went out-just take him

Yes I have decided to back off slightly and let him take the lead rather than nag him all the time cos I think its starting to drive him a bit mad. I forgot to take him this afternoon before getting in car and he wet himself in the car but I did ask him before we set off and he said he wasnt needing. its so frustrating! oh well. we will just plod on! thanks x
