3yo potty training angst

Ds is 3 and 3 months, and shows no interest in potty training. He can definitely hold on, because often his nappy is dry in the morning, and he often chooses to wee in the shower after swimming (so has clearly held on in the pool). He goes off into a corner to poo -- in fact he goes into another room and gets cross if disturbed! However, he has never, ever done anything in the loo or potty. We thought that given his age, awareness and control we'd just put him in pants and see how it went... ... Lots of wet pants and an upset boy. I'm a bit puzzled -- he's my fourth and you'd think I'd know what I was doing by now. All my olders were potty trained at 2 and 9 months-ish. Can he *really* not be ready at over 3??
