Potty training

Potty training and daytime nap - what to do?

I'm attempting potty training DS tomorrow, using the Gina Ford method, which just puts him in pants and lets him poo everywhere get on with it.

What should I do about his nap? He has a nap for around 1 hour, but sometimes he can be difficult about going down! Should I put a nappy on him, or pants and protect the cot? Ms Ford is silent on this point!

Many thanks.

Didn't do GF, but with DS I think I put him a nappy to start with (treating it same as night-time) but pretty quickly he protested and wouldn't have one on so I got some inco mats for him to sleep on for naps. A waterproof sheet is a good investment in any case, he still has one on his bed aged 4.5 for those (rare) accidents.

Oh, and I'm half-arsedly faffing about training DD (2yrs) atm. There has been poo on the kitchen floor - she insists it was a 'potato' Hmm

I used nappies for naps for ages as well.

I used nappies at naptime for a while but you have to get them out of it as soon as they wake up and get them onto the toilet to avoid confusion. And of course sit them on the potty beofre nap and avoid large drinks half hour or so before naptime.

I only did it for a shortwhile though and then got a bedwetting tuck in sheet. I wish I could tell you the name but I don't know it, I got it at the baby show and there are no branded tags on it, it was the kind that you put over the sheets and tuck in so if they do wee you only need to wash that and not the whole bedding!

we also did it the GF way and didnt want to confuse by putting back and forth into pants and nappies so we used the pampers bedmats. Although they did slide about under the cot sheet a bit.

They were also good cut up for lining the carseat incase of accidents.

luckily he picked it up reasonably quickly so only went through 2-3 packs.

i did nappies for naps. some kids will hold their wee in until they have it put back on for naps, but once trained, they get over it...didn't take them of until thy could wee before an after on request.

I did the 'Barbara Wodehouse' PT scheme :)

Thanks all - my Mum is around to help tomorrow (praise the Lord, bless the woman! Smile) so I'll see what she suggests. [I say this because I said to her I was going to GF train him, and she said, oh, just do the old-fashioned way like I did with the three of you...and detailed...the GF way. Grin]

But waterproof mats- hadn't thought of those. Blush Damn, will have to get some, sharpish. And try it with nappies tomorrow.
Lindax - did you get many nap time incidents? Out of interest?

I didn't use nappies at all for naps, but having saif that both DD's trained when they were ready, rather than me saying 'we are doing it this week'. Not sure if that makes a difference though. DD1 i think may have had 1 accident (she was 2.6) and to date DD2 has had none (at 2.4

How old is he?

Oh, we use the Hippychick mats as they are not plastic but very absorbent

He's 2.7 and seems ready - tells me when he's going to do a poo (lovely!) etc, and insisted on wearing big boy pants today (he got them over his nappy because he was in nursery). Smile

Will look up hippychick.

I would just go for it. Make sure he gets used to having a wee before nap and one immediately on waking.

Fingers x'd all goes well Smile

Oh, and just another thought - if he has accidents in his pants, try taking them off and letting him go bare bottomed. My DD's were a bit rubbish at remembering/feeling the trigger if they were wearing pants (just felt like a nappy i guess) but were 100% ok if bare. I only did that for 3 days or so, but enough for them to identify what it felt like to need to go

Lindax - great tip about the bed mats for the car seat - I was about to order a pee pad but that is a much better idea! Thanks!
